The first move

Chapter 24: The First Move

Elias and Collins drove in silence, the city lights flickering past as they navigated the maze of streets leading back to the precinct. Joseph's agreement was a small victory, but the real game was only beginning.

"You think we can trust him?" Collins finally asked, breaking the tense quiet.

Elias exhaled, watching the smoke from his cigarette swirl in the cold night air. "We don't need to trust him. We just need him desperate enough to do what we ask."

Collins shook his head. "I don't like it. Feels like we're dealing with a rat in a sinking ship."

Elias smirked. "That's exactly what we're doing. And if he wants to live, he'll gnaw through the hull for us."

As they pulled up to the station, Elias' phone buzzed. Another unknown number.

"You don't know what you're getting yourself into, Mercer."

Elias narrowed his eyes, glancing around the street before replying. "Oh, but I do. And that should worry you."

The line went dead.

Collins frowned. "Who was that?"

Elias pocketed his phone, stepping out of the car. "Our first sign that Vale knows we're coming."

The war had officially begun.
