The warning shot

Chapter 25: The Warning Shot

The precinct was unusually quiet when Elias and Collins stepped inside. Officers moved with an eerie sense of purpose, avoiding eye contact as if they already knew trouble was brewing.

"Something's off," Collins muttered, glancing around.

Elias felt it too. The tension in the air, the way conversations hushed the moment they walked by—it was never a good sign.

As they reached his office, Elias noticed an envelope sitting on his desk. No postage. No markings. Just his name scrawled in black ink.

He opened it, unfolding the single sheet of paper inside.

Walk away while you still can.

A small metallic click from above made his instincts kick in. Elias lunged forward, shoving Collins out of the way just as the office window shattered. A bullet embedded itself in the wall where Collins had just been standing.

"Son of a—!" Collins gasped, pulling his own gun as he scrambled to cover.

Elias peered through the broken window, scanning the rooftops, but whoever had taken the shot was already gone.

Collins let out a shaky breath. "That wasn't a warning, Mercer. That was a damn kill shot."

Elias smirked, holding up the note. "Then I guess we're doing something right."
