Chapter 26: Into the Fire
Elias sat on the edge of his desk, turning the note over in his hands. The hitman had taken the shot without hesitation. That meant Vale wasn't just watching—he was done playing games.
Collins paced the office, still rattled. "That could've been it, Mercer. One inch to the left, and I'd be a damn chalk outline."
Elias exhaled, flicking his cigarette into the ashtray. "You knew what you were signing up for."
Collins scowled. "Yeah, but I like to at least pretend we have a chance to come out of this alive."
Elias smirked. "Then you'd better start believing it."
A knock at the door made them both turn. It was Captain Harris, his expression grim. "I need to see you both. Now."
They followed him down the hall into a conference room, where a set of crime scene photos were spread across the table. A body lay sprawled in a dingy alley, blood pooling beneath it.
Joseph Vale.
Collins cursed under his breath. "That was fast."
Harris crossed his arms. "Shot twice in the chest, execution-style. No witnesses. And something tells me you two know why."
Elias clenched his jaw. Joseph had barely agreed to help them, and now he was dead. Vale wasn't just cleaning up loose ends—he was sending a message.
Collins shook his head. "We're running out of options, man. Vale's always one step ahead."
Elias glanced at the photos again, his mind already working. "Then it's time we stop reacting and make our own move."
Harris narrowed his eyes. "Mercer, I don't like that look on your face."
Elias grinned. "That's because you're about to hate what I'm planning next."
