Chapter 6

After a moment of silence fell between us, given it was only our second meeting, a hint of awkwardness was inevitable.

Caelan had a reserved nature, so the task of finding topics for conversation naturally fell to me. I wracked my brain, searching for subjects we could discuss without crossing any boundaries.

At first, our conversation was stilted, but gradually, I began to relax.

I realized that no matter what I said, Caelan listened attentively and responded thoughtfully. There was no hint of perfunctory replies or impatience.

This was something I had never experienced with other men before.

Curiously, I asked, "How come someone as exceptional as you hasn't found someone to marry?"

Caelan gazed at me intently for a moment, then averted his eyes and replied, "Because the person I like doesn't like me back."

For a split second, I thought he might be referring to me.
