Our lives were perfect—you could say that. A happy family. Not to brag, but we were. What else could we ask for? What more did we need? We had each other.
Had.
We once did, until…
Change is sudden, an unannounced visitor. Some say it brings opportunity, a fresh start. But happiness can’t be constant—if it were, would we even cherish it? Maybe that’s why my family and I were given the other side of change. The side that takes rather than gives. If this was fate’s way of teaching us a lesson, then perhaps I’ll try to resent the heavens a little less.
In the blink of an eye, our world shifted. The happiness we once lived in became nothing more than a past we now look back on with envy.
How did this happen? How did we end up like this? Everything was fine… wasn’t it?
But answers don’t change, no matter how many times you ask the question. And I’ve asked these same questions too many times to count. Yet every time I close my eyes, I see him.
That vampire.
He’s the answer to my questions. The hand that turned my world upside down.
My own kind of hell.

I froze the moment my eyes landed on a particular creature I now hated with passion. He took slow strides toward me, his head tilting slightly to the side as he stared.
The sight alone was creepy.
“What do you want?” I snapped, my voice sharp with anger—but laced with caution. “What more damage do you want to do that you haven’t already?”
He chuckled, as if I had just said something amusing. “Where’s that kid?” he asked. “The one who can’t watch his mouth?”
“We don’t owe you anything.”
He chuckled again brushing past me. My heart flew to my throat when I caught a glimpse of his fangs peeking from his mouth. Blood drained from my face as memories of the last time I saw those fangs came rushing back.
