CHAPTER 40: Her Face

Rick's POV

I wondered, my thoughts spinning, trying to grasp what was happening around. For some reason, I felt drawn to the situation.

I was going to uncover every bit of it and maybe, through it, show how sorry I was for what I did ten years ago. I was naive and stupid then. That guilt, I still felt it strongly, hovering in my heart.

The nurse turned to leave, but I stopped her.

"Excuse me, do you know who this lady is to him?" I asked calmly.

"We're not sure yet, but it seems she works at Sterling Hospital," she replied, glancing at the file in her hand. "If you don't mind, I have work to do," she added and walked away.

I wanted to leave, but I froze. Doctors and nurses rushed in and out of that ward. Panic rose in me. Was this woman going to survive? I felt bad for Jack. We used to be best friends before that incident tore us apart.

Despite everything, that old bond stirred inside me.
