Chapter 2

Caelan's face changed slightly, and he spoke with an unnatural tone:

"I'm sorry, I've been so tired these past few days, I accidentally bought the wrong one."

I gently shook my head, not exposing his clumsy lie.

My phone rang.

Caelan glanced at it and asked in surprise:

"Serenity, did you book a flight?"

I hurriedly dismissed the text message, speaking in my usual tone:

"No, it's my brother's itinerary. He has my number."

My brother keeps a close watch over me.

Even when I had a falling out with my parents years ago to be with Caelan, who was just a poor boy then, my brother's love for me never diminished.

Caelan didn't think much of it, nodding and pulling me into his embrace.

"Serenity, let's bring your family back to the States."

"Then we'll get married."

His gentle tone caused an unexpected pang in my heart.

So a person really could marry someone they don't love for the sake of another.

I was momentarily speechless.

Caelan thought I was too moved to speak, so he held me even tighter.

"After we're married, we'll have lots and lots of children, okay..."

"Caelan, I want to be discharged."

I calmly interrupted Caelan's insincere flattery. He didn't hesitate, firmly refusing:

"No, your body hasn't fully recovered yet. You can't be discharged."

I rose from his embrace, gently pressing my lips to his cheek.

"I'm already much better. Since we're getting married, there are many things about the wedding I want to handle personally."

In our five years of dating, Caelan had never seen me this forward.

He froze in place, dumbfounded and only able to nod.

On the road, he took out an ice cream cake from the car's mini-fridge that he had prepared in advance.

He said it was specially bought to celebrate my discharge from the hospital.

But he forgot that my stomach was sensitive and I couldn't eat cold foods.

I put the cake back, pretending I had no appetite, and closed my eyes.

It turns out five years is enough time for everything to change beyond recognition.

Just as I opened the fingerprint lock at the front door, Faye excitedly rushed out from the bedroom.

"Honey, you're back!"

Caelan's smile froze, as if he had just remembered Faye's existence, and hurriedly explained:

"Serenity, don't misunderstand. The doctor said Faye hit her head in the car accident, causing memory confusion. I was worried about her being alone out of town with no one to take care of her, so I brought her back home."

"Honey, who is she?Faye wore my pajamas, timidly clinging to Caelan's arm as she asked in a soft voice.

"She......"

Seeing Caelan stumble over his words, unable to answer, I smiled knowingly.

"I'm Caelan's friend."

Caelan, caught off guard by my response, shot me a grateful look.

"Oh, I see."

Faye narrowed her eyes, the corners of her mouth drooping slightly as she lazily leaned against Caelan's shoulder and whined softly:

"Honey, I'm so tired. Come to bed with me."

"Alright."

Caelan lowered his gaze, his eyes filled with tenderness.

Perhaps he hadn't even noticed it himself, but when he spoke to Faye, the indulgence on his face was something he had never shown me.

Even after the bedroom light was completely out, I stood in the living room, lost in thought for a long time.

This apartment was the marital home we had saved up to buy when Caelan and I first started our business.

Even though we could later afford to live in a better neighborhood, we never moved away from here.

Only now, the lady of the house might no longer be me.

I stumbled back to the guest room, and in the darkness, my fingertips touched something sticky.
