Assuming Serenity was just being emotional, he never took her seriously.

He even instructed Serenity, whose legs were impaired from donating blood, to go upstairs and bring soup to Faye.

Caelan slapped himself across the face.

What had he done...

A photo slipped out from under the report. Caelan bent down to pick it up.

The photo showed a deformed stillborn fetus carelessly discarded in a medical waste bag.

After a long moment, Caelan could no longer control his emotions. He clutched the photo and report, breaking down in silent sobs.

Lady Langdon heard faint whimpering and entered the room, consoling him gently:

"Caelan, we can't bring back the dead. We need to look forward."

"No."

"I need to see a body to believe someone's dead! As long as I haven't seen Serenity's corpse, I won't believe she's really gone!"

Lady Langdon was startled by the obsession in Caelan's eyes, and couldn't help but frown.
