Before they could celebrate—or panic—the doors to the Archive slammed open.
A squad of heavily armed enforcers in black exosuits stormed inside, weapons raised. Their leader, a stern-looking woman with cybernetic eyes, stepped forward.
"Captain Voss. Unregistered Deviant." Her mechanical gaze locked onto Gabriel. "You are both under arrest for treason against the Federation."
Aurelia muttered a curse under her breath. "I really should've seen this coming."
Gabriel slowly stood, raising his hands. "Okay, let's talk about this."
"Silence." The enforcer snapped her fingers.
The System responded.
Gabriel's body locked up. He couldn't move. It was as if invisible chains had wrapped around his limbs, forcing him still.
[ADMINISTRATIVE LOCK ENGAGED.]
A forced command. They were using the System's authority to shut him down.
But there was a problem.
Gabriel wasn't playing by the System's rules anymore.
A slow, rebellious grin spread across his face.
Then, with sheer force of will—
He broke free.
The air shattered around him as the System's lock disintegrated. The enforcers staggered back, their screens glitching violently.
The leader's cybernetic eyes widened. "What… are you?"
Gabriel cracked his knuckles. "A problem."
And then, he ran.
