Looking at the dim and cramped environment before me, I couldn't help but feel both amused and exasperated.
"Sister Melody, the doctor said a bright and warm room would help with my recovery, so Landon gave me your room," Luna said.
"You don't mind, do you?"
Luna clung to Landon's arm, her smile concealing a hint of provocation.
Landon remained silent, his gaze wandering.
"I don't mind. This isn't my house, so it's not my place to decide," I replied.
When Landon heard this, his expression subtly changed, seeming slightly angry as he turned and walked away.
In the days that followed, the three of us lived "harmoniously" together.
Every time Landon came to see me, Luna would call him away for various reasons.
If it wasn't a stomachache, it was eye pain; if not dizziness, then heart palpitations.
Strangely enough, these tactics worked extremely well on Landon.
Even the housekeeper, Mrs. Winchester, couldn't stand it anymore. She would complain about Luna to me daily, occasionally slipping in a few personal comments.
"Mr. Channing is just temporarily confused. Once he comes to his senses, everything will be fine. We just need to be patient for now," Mrs.Winchester relayed Mrs. Channing's message, but it stirred no emotion in me.
Mrs. Channing was abroad on business and couldn't return, so she was trying to work on me, fearing Luna might snatch Landon away.
What they didn't know was that I would never marry Landon again.
All I wanted was to recuperate here until my leg healed.
The next morning, I woke to find the entire household bustling with activity.
The yard was being decorated elaborately, and I learned it was for Luna's birthday party that Landon was throwing.
Luna stood in the courtyard, wearing a pure white princess dress with a cinched waist, her face beautiful and her makeup impeccable.
"Good morning, big sis Melody," Luna said in a affected voice, swaying her hips as she approached, making a show of pushing my wheelchair.
I glanced sideways and immediately noticed the wedding shoes on her feet.
Those were my wedding shoes, custom-made by an artisan when Landon and I went to Italy together.
"Where did you get those shoes?" I asked, gripping her hand tightly, my voice tinged with anger.
"What are you doing, Melody? I..."Luna barely spoke a few words before her eyes turned red, and big teardrops started falling.
"Melody!"
Landon appeared out of nowhere, rushing to stand in front of me with a sense of urgency.
Luna broke free and hid behind Landon.
"Sister Melody was just asking me about the shoes. She didn't lay a hand on me, Landon. Don't be angry."
"I found these shoes in the closet in the room. I thought you bought them for me, so I put them on..."
She rubbed her wrist, her tear-stained face looking as if she had some unspoken grievance.
Landon grew even more furious.
Luna's soft and delicate demeanor might make her appear alluring to men, but to me, she was nothing but a thorn in my side.
"It's just a pair of shoes. Was it really worth getting physical over?"
"Melody, don't you dare go too far!"
Landon looked down at me condescendingly, as if he were staring at a vicious stray dog, his eyes full of wariness and rage.
"Landon, why don't you open those damn eyes of yours and see that those are my wedding shoes! He turned to look at Luna, only now realizing that those were indeed my wedding shoes.
"There are plenty of wedding shoes. If you want some, I'll buy you a new pair."
"Luna just likes them, what's wrong with wearing them once? She'll naturally return them to you when she's had enough. Besides, your leg is broken now, what do you need wedding shoes for anyway!"
"Apologize to Luna, and we'll consider this matter settled."
