Anna steadied herself in the quiet solitude of her room. The walls felt closer than they had before, the weight of her decision pressing on her chest like a vice. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, taking in the fire behind her tired eyes. She hated the position she was in, hated the deal she had made, but she wouldn’t break. Not now, not ever. Not when Lilly’s life depended on her.

Straightening her shoulders, Anna let out a slow, deliberate breath. Her trembling fingers gripped the edge of the vanity, but her resolve hardened. She couldn’t afford to fall apart. Not now. Not ever.

After a few moments, she turned, slipped on her shoes, and headed downstairs. Her footsteps were steady, each step an act of defiance against the tightening grip of fear that tried to choke her. She wouldn’t let this life—or Jaden—consume her.
