Chapter 59- The Narrow Escape

The darkness in Jaden’s office was oppressive, each second ticking by like a countdown to her inevitable exposure. Anna pressed her back against the cold wall, willing her frantic heart to quiet as the door creaked open. The footsteps, deliberate and unhurried, echoed against the wooden floor, each step sending a jolt of terror down her spine.

Her breath was shallow, every nerve in her body screaming for her to bolt, but she couldn’t. She froze in place, blending into the shadows, her mind racing with desperate thoughts. Please don’t turn on the light. Please don’t see me.

Jaden stepped inside, his silhouette tall and imposing in the faint glow of the lights streaming through the window. Anna clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms as she watched him reach toward the wall. His hand hovered over the light switch, the tension in the room tightening like a noose around her neck.

Her heart pounded so loudly she was certain he could hear it. This is it. I’m caught.
