Chapter 13 A Perilous Defense

Alicia POV

I kept my hands clasped to try to cage the trembles. My cuffed wrists were linked to the chain that was bound around the metal bar that was centered on a heavy-duty steel table. The concrete box I was in, hardly different from my cell in solitary.

Four impenetrable walls that felt like they were slowly closing in, each breath drawing them nearer. Just as the air was thinning with every passing moment like a crushing force was gradually exerting pressure on my chest. I was seated opposite my chillingly solemn-faced lawyer dressed in his crisp, double-breasted suit. Whereas I was outfitted in a neon-bright yellow jacket, so striking against the dull landscape of ashen grey, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent lights.

“I would ask if you were doing well,” he began, peering over at me with a probing stare, a curious forward slant of his head. “But the tell of the bruises and that you were in solitary confinement. I guess I can figure that part out myself.”
