Chapter 49

Nicholas’s face paled as frustration washed over him. “Emily, don’t forget we’re still married!”

She nodded. “I know. I just wanted to get to know the other person. I’m not planning to do anything.”

“You—!” Nicholas clenched his fists, anger flashing in his eyes.

Emily raised her hand. “Can I please have my phone back?”

She had hoped to enjoy the party, but once again, Nicholas had ruined it. It felt like wherever he was, nothing good could ever happen.

Nicholas held onto her hand, saying, “Just stay with me for a moment, and I’ll give you your phone back.”

Emily frowned and pulled her hand away sharply. “I gave you the phone!” Worst case, she’d just buy another one. She couldn’t stand being near him for even a second longer.

As she turned to leave, Nicholas wrapped his arms around her from behind, whispering, “Emily, I misunderstood you today. I’m sorry.”

Taken aback, she tried to push him away, but he held on tighter. “Please forgive me. I know I was wrong.”
