Emily slowly raised her tear-filled eyes and met his gaze, seeing worry etched across his face. His heart clenched at the sight of her tears.
He had seen her cry countless times before, but it had never affected him like this. Now, it pained him deeply. Without thinking, he reached out and wiped away her tears.
"Everything's okay now. I’ve dealt with them. No one will hurt you again. You don’t need to be scared," he reassured her, his voice soft.
But his words only made Emily cry harder. She couldn’t stop herself as the terror she’d felt during the attack washed over her again. Her thoughts kept returning to the child she carried, and the possibility that she might have lost it. She had been so close to death, injected with something sinister. She hadn’t thought she'd survive.
Nicholas’s face softened even more as he watched her break down.
