Alan's face fell. "Lily…" he murmured, reaching out as if to comfort her, but Lily quickly stood up, recoiling from him as if he were a stranger she couldn't bear to be near.
"Don't even think about touching me," she snapped. "I told you I don’t want to see you. Why can’t you just leave me alone?"
Alan bit his lip, looking both hurt and humiliated. Glancing over at Emily, he tried to muster a small, pleading smile. " Sister in law, Nicholas and I are having dinner in the private room. Why don’t you join us?"
He hoped Emily’s presence might convince Lily to come along, giving him one last chance to make things right. He knew he’d made mistakes and was desperate to start over with Lily, and Emily was the only person who could help him.
But before Emily could even respond, Lily scoffed. "Don't call her 'sister-in-law.' Emily and Nicholas are divorced, and neither of us has any interest in being around you two. Just leave us alone."
