Dinner and Sweets

The dinner went on like I’ve known them for a long time. The conversation was so natural. It took time for me to wake up and realize that what was happening was real. His parents are as friendly as him. I guess I get where his personality came from. And it seemed Caleb really did talk about me a lot. The topic was all about me and it was something that I’ve already told him. I should be mad because he was such a blabbermouth but I didn’t. Instead, I felt happy about it.

I found no hint of discrimination or bitterness from them. They were genuinely curious and kind people. They didn’t let me feel unwelcomed or uncomfortable. After that dinner, Caleb walked me back to the packhouse. My mind was reeling as we walked. I still could not understand why they were so kind to me.

“Thank you, Caleb.” He smiled. “Even though I don’t know why you guys are so kind to me.”

“I believe I already told you the reason why, Rin. The pack is mourning for our loss especially with the Alpha family. They’re very important to us. Without them, this pack will crumble. We won’t know what to do. However, not everyone will feel that anger and pain. Not everyone will blame you. The previous Alpha taught us well, Rin. He was kind, just and a very great leader. We value peace, order, harmony and friendship. It’s what he always pushed for.”

“Despite his great teachings, the loss overwhelmed them.” I remarked.

“I guess so. For that, on behalf of them, I’m sorry, Rin. I’m even more sorry that you’re so understanding of this. You’re just as kind. Whatever the Alpha’s plans, I hope he will wake up soon and see the good in you.”

I stayed quiet after that. I doubt it will happen anyway. His fury sent shivers down my spine. I’ve never seen anyone who had that kind of rage, those burning intense emotions. He had humiliated me in the worst possible way.

When we reached the kitchen, Caleb bid his farewell and walked back home. Rose was arranging the items from the cabinets as I sauntered towards her.

“Did you have a good time?” She asked. There was no hint of anger in her voice.

“I’m sorry, Rose.” I hope she doesn’t get mad though. I know she’s calm right now but I just want to be sure.

“It’s okay.” She said, turning to face me. “I’m glad you found a friend. Caleb is a good kid. He’ll take care of you.” She said with a smile. “Apology accepted, by the way. Though I don’t know about the rest. They were pretty disappointed that there were no desserts made. After all, they were looking forward to it.” We both chuckled.

Julian

Silence consumed the room as I waited for my dear friend to respond to my report. Minutes had gone by, still he was quiet, spacing out behind his desk.

I cleared my throat, faking a cough to grab his attention. “Alpha.” No response. “Lucan.” I finally grabbed his attention.

“What?”

I watched him in disbelief. “I suggested that we mention again to the council about you being king.” A deep frown etched on his face. I know he doesn’t like this topic but it was necessary for the plan. “It might be a perfect set up to bring forth those who betrayed Blood Moon and the former Alpha.”

“It is a good plan. However, it might be another cause for another attack on Blood Moon. It was part of the reason my family was murdered.” He said so nonchalantly. He had put off his grieving and focused on our pack. It was truly sad to see my friend like this but alas, it was part of being the Alpha. Not to mention one of the biggest packs.

I nodded in agreement. It was indeed risky. I studied my Alpha. For an impatient man, he sure was being patient and meticulous for his revenge. I would never have expected this from him. The man has a short fuse.

After I was relieved, I went straight to Nasrin’s room hoping that she’s still awake at this time of the night. I knocked on the door. It didn’t take long for her to answer.

“Julian?” She didn’t hide her surprise and curiosity right when she saw me. Her face fell when suddenly, a memory crossed her mind. “I mean Beta.” She said with a long face.

“It’s alright. You can call my name when there’s only the two of us.” Her face brightened at my suggestion. I don’t know why but I didn’t like seeing the frown on her face. “Are you perhaps on your way to sleep?” It was now that I noticed that she’s still wearing her clothes earlier today.

“I was going to take a shower. Do you need something?” She asked with a tilt of her head.

“Yes. Can you come down to the kitchen? I need you to do something for me.”

“You want me to make something sweet?” She asked. Although the tone of her question was contradicting, she still prepared the utensils for baking. “Isn’t it kind of late to eat something like that? You might have a sugar rush. You will be unable to sleep.” She said teasingly.

“It’s not for me.”

Her eyebrows knitted in confusion. “It isn’t?”

“Although I would like to have some, too, but I’m requesting this for the Alpha. It’s not really obvious but he’s a sweet tooth.”

“He is?” Her eyes wide in awe and obviously in disbelief.

“You didn’t make one at supper. I could see his disappointment.”

She laughs. “And I thought you don’t joke.”

I frowned, crossing my arms. How dare she laugh. “I’m not.” She frowns. “Look, just make one. Anything.” Instead of working on it, she just stared at me in bewilderment.

She looks down. “I thought he’s mad that I was the one who made all the desserts. Wouldn’t he be mad that you purposely called me just to make him something to appease him?"
