Chapter 98: The Tower's Secret

Five-leaf clovers? Ethan wasn't interested in that at all.

Others might not know, but he was very clear:

Once a grimoire turns into a five-leaf clover, it means it has been possessed by a demon.

Just like Asta's.

His grimoire was originally a four-leaf clover, containing sword magic and belonging to the elven leader, Licht.

But due to the Word Magic Devil's intricate schemes, Licht fell into despair and developed hatred toward humans.

Although he ultimately stopped himself in time and didn't let the devil succeed, his grimoire still transformed into a five-leaf and became inhabited by another devil.

Indeed, demonic power could grant incredible strength.

Asta's devil transformation was proof of that.

But for Ethan, such power was unnecessary — something he could take or leave.

"Two four-leaf clovers? But where did you get those books?"

As the old tower master spoke, Ethan could clearly sense a shift in his tone.

What had been friendly curiosity was now laced with sharp suspicion — as if the man was ready to strike at any moment.

"Where else? I got them from here," Ethan replied calmly.

"Here? You are…"

The tower master frowned, inspecting him closely.

He might forget other things, but the owners of the four-leaf clovers — he remembered every one.

Since the foundation of the Grimoire Tower, fewer than a hundred people had received four-leaf grimoires.

He never forgot a single face or name.

The young man before him didn't match any of those memories — at least not recently.

But then he recalled: In recent years, only one person had ever received two four-leaf clovers — a boy named Ethan.

Still, that Ethan didn't look like this.

"No doubt, these books are mine. Due to certain reasons, my appearance has changed a bit.

If you don't believe me, go ask the Magic Knights — they'll confirm it."

The tower master nodded. He noticed Ethan was wearing the uniform of the Magic Knights.

Though the style varied, the design was unmistakable.

"I see. That's unusual indeed…"

He mumbled to himself.

"So, since you're not here to exchange your grimoire, what brings you back?"

Although Ethan's identity was confirmed, the tower master still didn't understand his purpose.

The Grimoire Tower had only one function: bestowing grimoires.

Ethan already had his — there should be no reason to return.

"I want a few more."

Ethan grinned.

The tower master froze.

Was this boy stupid?

He had just explained — each person only got one chance to receive a grimoire.

Once acquired, no matter how good or bad it was, it couldn't be changed or redone.

"Your idea is a fantasy. Everyone gets one chance. Besides, you only have wind and fire attributes. Even if you obtained another grimoire, you couldn't cast the spells in it."

Ethan grinned wider.

He raised his left hand, and a globe of water floated gently in his palm.

Then, sparks of lightning danced across the fingertips of his right hand.

The tower master's eyes widened in shock.

Ethan was supposed to only have wind and fire attributes. So how—

"What do you think? Want to see more?" Ethan chuckled like a magician showing off a trick.

Light.

Darkness.

Earth.

Space.

Even several complex derivative magics manifested around him, one after another.

The old man's expression shifted again and again.

He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"How is this possible… how can you wield so many magic types?"

He was stunned.

Back when Ethan received his grimoire, he'd had only two elements — wind and fire.

All subsequent reports confirmed it.

How did he suddenly possess so many attributes?

"I can't fully explain it," Ethan said honestly. "But currently, I can use no fewer than a hundred different types of magic. So I'd like to try and see if I can receive more grimoires."

That was his true purpose for coming.

Yes, a person was only allowed to receive a grimoire once.

But likewise, each person only had one natural attribute.

A lock was only compatible with a single key.

Thus, no other grimoire would resonate with an incompatible magic type.

But Ethan was different.

The chaotic and mysterious energy inside him acted like a master key, capable of unlocking countless elemental doors.

So he wanted to know — could he now receive grimoires of other elements too?

"I see... Then go ahead. Try."

After a moment of contemplation, the tower master nodded.

This was the first time he'd encountered such an absurd request.

Yet within that absurdity, there was a faint thread of possibility.

After all, no one in history had ever been like Ethan.

Might as well try and find out.

He raised his staff, as if activating a hidden system.

And with that, Ethan finally understood why his earlier attempts had failed — the Grimoire Tower was under someone's control.

Without permission, no one could alter anything.

After a few seconds, the tower master lowered his staff and said,

"All right. You may proceed as you wish."

Ethan nodded.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.

Inside his body, the chaotic energy shifted — and he transformed it into water.

Gentle and flowing magic radiated outward from him.

One second.

Two seconds…

The tower master observed the Grimoire Tower carefully.

"Nani?!" he gasped.

A grimoire glowing with a blue light floated out of one of the bookshelves.

There was only one explanation:

The grimoire had chosen a master.

"He actually succeeded!"

Ethan opened his eyes and chuckled, surprised.

To be honest, he hadn't been completely sure it would work.

It was just a hypothesis — a gamble.

But clearly, his instincts had been correct.

"Hmm… but why is there no emblem?"

He reached out and took the book in hand.

Unlike the others, this grimoire had no clover emblem on its cover.

It was light blue and completely unmarked.

Flip—

He opened it.

To his surprise, the pages weren't blank.

The book was about three centimeters thick, and nearly a third of it was filled with text.

After reading a few pages, Ethan realized:

Every spell listed was a water-based magic he currently knew how to use.

In other words—

This grimoire really was his.
