DUTY

Ixora and I appeared in a dark hallway which seemed to be illuminated with torches. Ixora took one out off it's stand and held the wood in her hand.

"Hold this and let's walk." Ixora said handing the wood over to me. We started walking down the hallway. I stared at the stone hallway, wondering where it led to. We came out of the hallway which was actually a tunnel and in front of them were six other tunnels which the names of the places where it led to were inscribed in the stone.

"Welcome to the Sage's Temple Emma." Ixora said and kept on moving and I followed. We went into the one which led into the LIBRARY.

The Library was a very big one. The bookshelves in it were big and aligned with books of different sizes. There was a big step ladder, it had wheels all four of em' and seemed to have a mind of it's own. It wheeled right in front Ixora and Ixora touched the stand and tapped it twice. The ladder shook a little and rolled past us.

I looked at Ixora with confusion. "Is...."

"It's a magical ladder, and it's very happy." Ixora said.

We kept moving until we reached a door. Ixora opened and we entered. It was a room the size of a bedroom. At the far end was a bookshelf but it was just the regular size. Ixora took me to a chair and made me sit facing a wall. Or was it a wall. I was clearly confused. The wall was blue and by looking at it, it seems I was being sucked inside.

"Now I'll tell you a story." Ixora said pulling me out of my thoughts. She came and stood next to me.

"Since the beginning of time, there has always been two realms, the spirit realm and the human realm." Ixora began and as she said that, the wall in front of me seemed to have divided of some sort. One part was blue and the other green.

"The blue stands for the spirit and the green for the humans."

"Oh." I said not knowing if I should have spoken or not. But Ixora didn't mind and continued.

"Our realm was guided by seven guardians who set out rules for us. The main reason for that was because over here in the spirit realm, there were good and bad creatures." As she spoke, the wall showed clips of what she said. Wait, did she just say here in the spirit realm. We were in the spirit realm. I was in the spirit realm. Oh boy.

"So the rules were for us to live in peace. That was until one guardian died." Ixora said. The wall showed me seven dragons, all standing with superiority, fierce eyes, each had two horns with a very long tail.

I looked at Ixora and asked. "Were the guardians deadly looking dragons?" Ithought dragons were extinct.

Ixora looked at me. "No. That is them in their shift form."

I looked confused. "Shift form?"

Ixora sighed. "They can shape shift into dragons Emma."

"Oh." Was all I could say. "Please continue."

Ixora looked forward. "When one guardian died, the power they had over us weakened a little. The barrier, I mean the gate blocking us creatures from entering the human world, it's power weakened. We don't know how that guardian died, it's possible it might have been killed.

"When did all this happen?" I asked. I had a sick feeling in my gut when Ixora spoke of the guardian's death.

"About two hundred years ago." Ixora replied and I felt as if a bomb had been dropped on my head. When I didn't reply, Ixora continued.

"The bad creatures noticed that the gate's power had weakened, they tried to get out to feast on humans, but they couldn't. Fifty years later, another guardian died. And that was all they needed. The creatures entered the human world and killed them, if you're dead, they feast on your soul. We the good creature tried to stop them but they just killed us too. That was until the guardians came to the gate. They used all their powers and created an Emerald which they used in locking the gate. The Emerald was a big one the size of a diamond, and it's power sucked all the bad creatures back into the spirit realm. It had a key too, the size of a smaller one, but after what happened the guardians couldn't trust us again. Instead they threw the key and a piece of Emerald into the human world, to find a person worthy of accessing it's power." Ixora paused for a moment, then continued.

"Because there were five guardians instead of seven, the gate still wasn't strong enough, but at least it kept the strongest creature both good and bad out of the human world. Only the weak ones that were minor could enter the human world. The emerald Key found a successor named Adam. And for the last 100 years, he kept peace between the two worlds, until he was attacked. He was killed but before then then, he had hidden the key in a place not known to anyone. I don't even know about it." Ixora ended. Her eyes were closed. I wondered if it was because of Adam's death.

"Umm....." I wanted to say something but Ixora spoke up again.

"We waited years for another successor, nothing. That was until two days ago, when we found you."

I looked at her not wanting to put two and two together. Ixora looked back at me.

"You're the new guardian Emma Arnold."

I stood up without speaking, How did she even know my full name. Forget that, I'm the new guardian. Oh no. I didn't sign up for this when I was being born.

"But you know....." I didn't even know what to say.

"Adam was 21 years old when he became a guardian, I'm surprised the Emerald was given to a 17 year old." Ixora said and I could have sworn I heard some sort of sarcasm in her voice. What's the damn difference between 17 and 21.

"Emma," She said again. "Don't be scared, nothing will happen to you."

I sighed. I had no choice now did I. There was no way I'm getting out of this. I guess I could make the most of it.

"Do I get to see the guardians?" I asked with excitement in my eyes. I get to see real dragons.

"No." Ixora said and my excitement dropped.
