Chapter 8: Trainer License Exam
~Azure S. POV~
[Kanto Region, Days Later, Morning, Viridian City – Hotel]
After some additional training on Pikachu to learn how to battle and how to properly throw a Poke Ball, it was time. We rested up early, with Pikachu tired from fighting and training all day long, with some breaks in between, of course.
Take the time to relax and heal before the big day today. Anyway, as I prepared the bowls for Pikachu. I rechecked his stats, seeing Pikachu grow stronger battling against the Wild Pokémon, steadily leveling up.
|Name: Partner Pikachu
|Type: Electric
|Level: 12
|Gender: Male
|Held Item: None
|Ability: Lightning Rod (Hidden Ability)
|Nature: Hasty
|Moves: Thunder Shock [A], Quick Attack [A], Double Team, Tail Whip, Thunder Wave, Iron Tail, Electro Ball, Volt Tackle (IM), Wish (EM) (3 Moves to Learn)
Thanks to the training, Pikachu managed to learn Iron Tail when he reached Lv.10. And I'll show the world the Steel Type and other types that exist. I'll gladly show the world the Steel, Dark, and Fairy Types that exist.
Also, a side trivia that I found out is that I'm coming to learn about this world. Pokémon moves can be determined by the color of the Aura they use around here, as well as abilities that, in effect, show up on the Pokémon's aura.
I took the time to read research books about the Pokémon world of the manga in my spare time via my Arc Phone. The Arc Phone is handy and has the Pokémon TV along with other series that the Guild Master hooked me up on.
Sigh… I feel prepared for this. At the very least, I had Pikachu manage to learn the Arceus move styles of Agile or Strong Style. Those will be very handy to have in future battles.
But finally, the day has come. Using my time effectively, I've had Pikachu train in using Iron Tail, trying different ways for him to learn. I tried to train my Pokémon in different moves that fit the fighting styles I had in mind.
Pikachu, at the time, was still training on his Iron Tail with his tail having rocks tied to it using Ash's method while focusing her aura, trying to turn it into Steel-type energy. And if that worked, I focused on the rock walls to get my result.
However, I felt confident enough that I was able to command Pikachu as it was time to see if I got that Trainer's License. After taking some time to relax a bit after my Pokémon was fully healed up and fed, I knew it was time.
I immediately decided to get my Trainer License first, and I went with a checkup appointment I made with Nurse Joy yesterday to get myself registered. I only needed to do a few tests before going straight for the practical.
I must do a Pokémon Battle to see how far I can go in seeing my potential. Thankfully, reading up on the books on how to be a Pokémon trainer certainly helped me a lot and made me remember a lot about my time playing the Pokémon game, with the useful trivia facts, thanks to the Pokémon anime.
Thank you, Ash Pokedex trivia! And thank you, Arc Phone, for the entertainment!
Waiting for my Pokémon to be fully healed and content and fully available for today, I managed to leave the hotel room and head straight towards the Pokémon Center. That place provides the best service available for people who are Trainers with free medical care but for everyone else, not so much.
They will provide free healing to your own Pokémon if said Pokémon is in any critical danger, but if not, then you might as well get the medicines from the Poke Mart, as I have. It's time. It's either I go big or go home. It's showtime.

[Kanto Region, Viridian City – Pokémon Center]
As I entered the Pokémon Center, there were doubts in my mind, wondering if I had failed or lost. But I shook those thoughts off my head. I immediately entered inside at the front desk of Nurse Joy, politely asking, "Hello, sir, are you here to heal your Pokémon for today?"
Shaking my head in response, I replied to Nurse Joy in a respectful tone about my appointment with her, "Sorry, Nurse, but no. I'm here for the Trainer License appointment for the second trial fast pacing this."
At this, she nodded, asking me to follow her back, taking me to a room with others like me around her, and asking me to take a seat on the free available spot next to another trainer Nurse Joy spoke out clearly, "Ok everyone, for those that entered the Second Trial to be a Pokémon Trainer you must have a score of at least 70% or higher to pass the first portion before we go to the second! Everyone, do your best!"
"Thanks!"
Everyone, including me, replied to the Nurse as I took the chance to read the questions, smirking internally. I know this.
I began to write down the question about the beginning one. Mentally laughing, I read the question in my head. Which of the following is a Grass-type Pokémon that is one of the Starters?
-Bulbasaur
-Bellsprout
-Tangela
-Oddish
Gazing my eyes down on the rest of the questions, I could smile seeing studying up for this, along with my eyes gazing at a certain troublesome girl in here as well. I guess Green is also doing well.
Considering her circumstances, I suppose the Mask Man couldn't exactly skip out on her education relating to Pokémon. Whatever, she has her issues to handle, and I have mine.
Writing down all I could believe to be the best I could answer with some doubt here and there, I could only hope for the best to see what outcome I get. I answered the question with some ease, remembering being mentioned either from the game or show, but I made sure to act like I was struggling, like everyone else here, waiting a good bit before I finally turned it in.
When I finished my written portion of the exam, I put my pencil down and turned my paper over. Man, this feels like school all over again, but hopefully, I do well in the battle portion of the exam.
Waiting patiently for the others, Nurse Joy finally comes out, announcing the results for the next portion of the test, "Thank you very much, everyone, for trying the Trainer License. Now, would you all please look at the board? It will announce the names of those who pass, facing off against one another in a Pokémon Battle to best determine who can earn their Trainer License!"
Gulping my spit, seeing the blackboard light up, I waited to see if my name was there, hoping for a bit, and not before long, I saw my name, Azure Sky, pop up. I sighed in relief as I faced off against someone named Ralph.
Hell, I even see Green's name pop up at the top of number one, which is no surprise to me, considering she had the training despite not being out of her own free will. Hopefully, she will get out of her funk.
When those whose names didn't appear on the board were called down, Nurse Joy began to explain to everyone, "Ok, for those that didn't pass, no worries, you can all try again next month when you feel prepared. And for those that have passed, please follow me to the Battlefield outside the Pokémon Center."
Nodding in agreement, following everyone else with those who failed, I followed everyone behind as Nurse Joy showed us where we could find the battlefield outside, gesturing us to battle with other trainers nearby. "Ok, everyone, this right here is where everyone will have a Pokémon Battle! The Elite Trainers viewing the Battlefield will view how you do well and will react accordingly if you pass or not."
Everyone nodded as I waited patiently, sitting down as the other newbies began to have their Pokémon battle while I closely examined everything, thinking of possible battle strategies to go against them.

[Later, Kanto Region, Viridian City – Pokémon Center (Battlefield)]
Waiting patiently for my name to be called, I stood up, hearing my name as Nurse Joy said, "Would Azure Sky and Ralph Cage please come!"
Hearing my name being called out, I followed behind, holding my 1 Poke Ball, walking down with Ralph doing the same, while I made mental notes of which trainer had Pokémon on them as I narrowed down the typing being used. The usual typing I see belongs to the Poison, Normal, Flying, Bug, Electric, and Grass types.
Rarely do I see a Diglett from one of the Trainers here with Ground coverage beating their opponents when it uses Dig on it. And contemplating different Pokémon being used in this round, I must carefully consider which ones's being used against me.
I can make a safe guess of what Pokémon Trainers used, being the Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pikachu, or Nidoran. After deliberating on which Pokémon he'll pick, I exhaled, preparing myself.
Standing on my side of the match, one of the Elite Trainers nodded at this, signaling the use of 1 Pokémon, while my adversary, Ralph, agreed, pointing one of his fingers up and using 1v1 Pokémon in this mock match.
The Elite Trainer, acting as our referee, nodded and began to go ahead with the announcements, which gave us the go-ahead in a nonchalant tone, "Alright! The Trainer License test to see which of you earns them shall now begin! Go and bring forth your Pokémon!"
Not hesitating, I yelled out my Pokémon name as did my foe, seeing it out in the open for everyone to hear. Tossing our Poke Balls, we announced our Pokémon popping out, prepared for battle.
*Pop*
"Let's go! Pikachu!"
*Pop*
"Let's go, Nidoran (M)!"
Nidoran (M) is a small, quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon. It is pinkish purple with darker patches. It has large, spiny ears with teal insides, oversized front teeth, and red eyes. Its back is covered with three lines of large spines that can release potent poisons if threatened. The center line of the spines is taller than the other two.
The size of the long, pointed horn on its forehead is indicative of the strength of its venom. Nidoran is a male-only species. Raising my Arc Phone and activating its Pokedex function gave me the info on my enemy.
[Nidoran (M) the Poison Pin Pokémon. The male Nidoran has developed muscles for moving its ears. Thanks to them, the ears can be freely moved in any direction. Even the slightest sound does not escape this Pokémon's notice.]
Each chose our respective Pokémon, with Pikachu at the ready for battle, waiting for my command, with Ralph doing the same as I gave out my command, "Pikachu hit him with a Tail Whip, followed by Double Team!"
Pikachu cried out, "Pika!!!"
Agreeing right away, Pikachu created illusionary copies, hiding immediately, followed by a Tail Whip lowering Nidoran's defense. A light blue hue shrouded the Nidoran, signaling a debuff done to it.
Ralph was caught up and surprised by the classic defense debuff tactic, with Ralph responding right away, "Shit. Nidoran use Poison Sting! Track down that Pikachu using your ears!"
Not a bad strategy. Nidoran (M) constantly listens for the sounds of approaching enemies with its large ears.
Said ears have unique muscles that allow them to be moved in any direction, and even the slightest sound does not escape their notice. To listen to distant locations, it flaps its ears like wings.
And it's doing such a trick right now with Pikachu temporarily evading Nidoran, but two can play the same game. Pikachu detects where Nidoran would shoot his Poison Sting, using his ears to twitch.
*Pew*
*Pew*
Avoiding the Poison Stings, while I gave the command silently under my breath for Pikachu to hear with his ears whispered, "Follow up with another Tail Whip on the ground to mess with Nidoran echolocation, Pikachu, then follow up with Double Team, then use Thunder Wave."
Pikachu understood my actions right away as he used Tail Whip on the ground to create a distraction, confusing Nidoran. Nidoran was forced to locate Pikachu with its ears, trying so hard to find my Mouse Pokémon.
Nidoran flinched, granting Pikachu to use Double Team, then followed up by Thunder Wave as Pikachu cried out, "Chu…!"
*Shiii*
Pikachu cries out and shoots out a weak electric shot that paralyzes Nidoran. That's to help demoralize the opponent Pokémon by continuing to use Double Team and increasing my setup.
Ralph was worried, seeing Nidoran paralyzed, and nervous about finding where Pikachu was located. All the while, my Pokémon used Tail Whip to send it flying away, having been debuffed 3 times.
Feeling this would be enough, I gave my Pikachu a command, lunging my arm out in a commanding tone, "Good job, Pikachu! You did well. Now use Quick Attack and Iron Tail on Nidoran!"
A light glow showed on Pikachu's body, and his tail shone gray cried out, "Pika!!!"
*SWOOOSH*
*SHING*
*SMASH*
Agreeing right away, Pikachu rushed forward using Quick Attack speed. And lunged at Nidoran using its Iron Tail smack over its head, tossing the poor Pokémon to the side of the battlefield.
We waited a bit for Nidoran to stand up. Except it never did, as with three debuffs and an attack that hit fast and hard, that Pokémon was down for the count.
With Ralph losing this battle, I knew what was going to happen next as the referee spoke out loud in a neutral tone, "Challenger Ralph Cage has been defeated! The winner is Azure Sky!"
Smiling at this, I congratulated Pikachu on his hard work in winning this battle in a happy tone, "Good job, Pikachu. You did extremely well today; be sure to expect some nice treats."
Pikachu's eyes shoot open as it cries out happily, "Pika!"
Happily agreeing to my words, Ralph bitterly returned to his seat while the Elite Trainers nodded at this battle. Not only that, people seemed to be impressed with my battle, along with Green looking wide-eyed, seeing that move Iron Tail.
Even the Elite Trainer looked surprised seeing the Iron Tail move. And this is only the beginning to show off to the world.
Heh. If I ever get a fancy title, I bet mine would be the [Move Tutor].
