Caroline woke up to a strange tapping sound, and she rolled over, keeping her eyes closed in the hopes whatever it was would go away, and she could go back to sleep. When the tapping continued, she opened one eye and saw Nadine sitting at her desk, a laptop opened before her. The misadventures of the night before rushed back to her; Caroline sat upright, scattering pillows and knocking the bedside lamp off the table.
Nadine turned around and smiled. “Do you always wake up so dramatically?”
Caroline grinned as she slid off the bed and picked up the lamp, righting it on the table. “How long have you been here for?”
“Not long, only about an hour.”
“What time is it anyway?”
Nadine peered at the time on the laptop. “It’s just past 5:30.”
“Corbin was here for a bit then.”
“Oh, no. Aldrick relieved him about 2:30, I think.”
“Aldrick was here?” Caroline asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the quickening of her heart at his name.
