Chapter 49: Crystal Weights

Gaspar sped down the darkened street, his feet pounding along the road the only sound in the still night. Not that he could hear anything over the thundering of his heart as it pounded against his chest. The streetlights were out, but it made no difference—he knew the town, the street, like the back of his hand. Gaspar passed the houses in a blur, his Surnatural strength in need now more than ever. He silently prayed that he’d reach them before it was too late.

Aldrick gently cut off part of the branch from the ancient marble oak and lay it before him on the desk. Hovering his hand over it, he closed his eyes and muttered an incantation. With a cracking sound, the piece splintered into tiny fragments, each one fragmenting further until it was reduced to a pile of tree dust.

“Will that be enough?” Nadine asked as she carefully blended the herbs together in a mortar and pestle.
