Chapter 10

I'm sitting on the couch, silently listening to the TV host's report.

"Traffic accident, unfortunately... deceased."

I softly repeat the report from the TV, my vision blurring as if I'm seeing stars.

My hands shake as I reach for a tissue to wipe the water on the table, but I find that the more I wipe, the more there is. My face is also wet and sticky.

I stand up, wanting to run and turn off the TV, but my steps feel like I'm walking on clouds.

"Mommy!"

Serenity stands barefoot in the doorway. I don't scold her for walking around without shoes. I run over and grab her hand, my voice trembling: "Serenity, did you just hear who they were talking about on the news?"

She looks towards the screen,

"The news lady said the person's name was Everett."

"Mommy, look, they're showing a picture on TV."

A photo of Everett in a suit and tie appears before my eyes.

My ears start ringing, and a proper female voice buzzes in my head.

The next moment, the world spins.
