The daughter of darkness

The air was thick with an unsettling silence as Nyra stood in the centre of the cold, dimly lit room, the walls closing in around her. The hum of the air controlling did little to mask the chaos swirling inside her mind. Her breath came in shallow gasps, her hands trembling as she stared across the room and there stood.

Mr. Raghavan.

His sharp glaze flickered over her, the mask of indifference never leaving his face. But in his eyes, there was something else. A darkness. A truth that was about to be laid bare.

"How did i get here?" Nyra's voice trembled as she spoke, her mind still reeling from the moments that had led her here, this moment.

"You don't remember?" Raghavan's voice was low almost like a taunt.

"How predictable. I told you, Nyra, the past doesn't always stay buried. Sometimes it resurfaces, and when it does it's far more dangerous than you ever imagined."

Nyra felt a chill run down her spine.

"Stop playing games with me. What do you want?"

He chuckled darkly, taking a slow step towards her.

" What do I want? Do you remember who you really are?"

Her heart skipped a beat.

"What are you talking about?"

Mr. Raghavan's lips curled into a cruel smile. He said:

"You're not Nyra. You never were. Your name...Your life. It's all a lie. You are Kaira My daughter. The one I saved. The one I kept hidden. The one who was never supposed to remember."

The words hit her like a blow to chest. Kaira? She shook her head in disbelief, her vision blurring for a second as the ground seem to shift beneath her.

"No.....no...you are lying." she whispered, her voice breaking.

"I am Nyra. I am Nyra. I remember my mother. I remember everything."

"You think you do." he replied coldly, taking another step closer. His eyes were cold, calculating.

"But the truth is different. The memories you have? They are fragments. Constructed. False. Nyra was never real. I gave you the identity to keep you safe. To protect you from the truth."

Nyra felt the world spinning around her. Her mind was a whirlwind of confusion, of memories that no longer felt her own.

"What's....What's the truth." she whispered.

Raghavan's expression froze as he spoke. "You were supposed to be a perfect version of Elira.

But you weren't. You made mistakes. You were never meant to remember. You were never neant to uncover what I did to you."

Nyra stepped back," What did you do? What are you talking about?"

"You were part of an experiment, Kaira. You and Elira, both. You were meant to be the perfect creation of Elira, after she...." He trailed off, words hanging in the air.

"After she what....."

"After she died.....", he said in a sad tone.

"No you are lying."

"You are not my father."

"You ruined my life...my childhood."

"You used to mentally and sexually harass me."

"I am sorry Kaira.", he said.

"I didnt know...", he mutterred, his voice with a heavy guilt.

"How did you know I am your biological daughter." she asked.

"When you ran away. I......I found a note under my bed. It was from your mother. Your mother and I loved each other. But she married someone else because I was not successful at that time. Her parents rejected me. They married her off with a man almost double of her age. He was an alcohol addict. You used to abuse your mother. He did domestic violence. I told her to leave him but she was afraid to do so. Instead she started to live with me sometimes. One day she became pregnant. I thought the baby might be her husband's. But no... It was mine. It was my blood. I cut off ties with her when i came to know about her pregnancy. I thought her husband might become a good person now for his baby. But I was completely wrong. He knew the child was not his. He abused your mother even in pregnancy. When you were born he became more aggressive. I went to a meeting after your birth. Your mother came to my home at that time and kept this note under which I found after you escaped. I am really sorry Kaira. I could not become a good father. Maybe even a good person."

"How are you even calling yourself my father after what you did to me." she said aggressively."

" Kaira i know you will never forgive me but you need to know the truth."

"What is left now?"

"Your mother did not die by herself. Her husband killed her."

Nyra froze as she listened all this.

"Someone else is behind all this. I only tried to protect you. But someone else is trying to erase you. Be careful."

Nyra left the room.
