Director Li stood on set, frustration visible in every line of his face. “Where is Lu Meng?” he shouted, loud enough to make the crew flinch.
“She… took leave,” the assistant mumbled cautiously.
“Who approved it?”
“The assistant director.”
Director Li’s face turned a shade darker. “Is this a film set or a vegetable market? Coming and going as they please!”
As he turned, he noticed Ye Wenjia seated quietly, seemingly detached. An older man, graying at the temples, sat a few chairs away, brought in through Wenjia’s connections. Director Li sighed. Well, he had no one to blame but himself for that one.
He approached Wenjia, only to find him scrolling through his phone, his fingers twitching every few seconds as he refreshed Weibo compulsively. He wasn’t skimming gossip. No, it was something deeper.
Trying not to alarm the actor, Director Li asked gently, “Checking something?”
