Chapter 122 – Renji, Are You a Damn Walking Weapon?

Chapter 122 – Renji, Are You a Damn Walking Weapon?

"No problem. I'll put him to rest. In return, you'll join me as a researcher and help me refine the G-virus. I need a controllable G-virus, not one that turns people into monsters."

"Fine. And Sherry—you must bring her back safely. After that, she stays with me."

Annette laid out her terms. She agreed to Renji's offer, but he had to agree to hers.

What she didn't tell Renji was that she didn't really know how to guide the G-virus research the way he envisioned. William had tried to take it in that direction and failed. If even he couldn't do it, how could she?

"Don't worry. I'll bring Sherry back safely. So we go by what we agreed on—no other conditions, right?"

Renji confirmed again. Annette nodded, then glanced subconsciously at Ada Wong.

She knew that woman wasn't exactly trustworthy.

"Oh, she's the second-in-command of my organization now. Reasonably reliable."

Noticing her glance, Renji explained. But Ada immediately rolled her eyes: "Hey, hey, what do you mean reasonably reliable?"

This guy really didn't care about saving face.

But with strength like his, maybe he didn't need to.

Ada was a little irritated, but she forced herself to let it go. She realized it was best not to act rashly before figuring out all of Renji's secrets.

He was different from anyone she'd ever worked with. Even someone like Wesker might not be a match for him.

"Alright, let's deal with that monster already."

In the Resident Evil world, monsters had many counters, but their regeneration often made them near-invincible—even when burned or dissolved.

Strangely, sometimes nothing worked, and other times a single RPG solved everything.

"Right now his regeneration is powerful. Based on earlier experiments, the G-virus evolves continuously, but it also has a weakness—the eye."

Annette pointed at the eye on William's shoulder. That was the virus's weakness. If you didn't hit that, he could regenerate endlessly.

She really was a good wife.

Renji already knew the eye was the weak spot, but he still admired how quickly Annette shared the info.

One hand holding William down, Renji smashed a punch directly into the eye on his shoulder.

Even without using his abilities, the strength granted by the Eight Gates technique caused a shockwave that exploded the air.

Just one punch had the effect of an RPG blast.

"A monster… this guy can't be human."

Ada's jaw dropped. She forgot to keep her usual calm. This humanoid weapon felt like someone enhanced by the T-virus—or something even stronger.

And a successful enhancement, too. Could he be like Wesker?

"As I thought, regeneration has its limits. Once you push past it, it can't keep up."

Judging from William's injuries, Renji realized regeneration came from rapid cellular mitosis—similar to Hashirama Senju's healing. Fast, but at the cost of cellular mass.

The more the weak point was hit, the faster the body's reserves were depleted.

When the damage outpaced the healing, regeneration broke down.

Each time William healed, Renji broke him again. He kept him pinned and beat him mercilessly for ten full minutes.

Eventually, the regeneration slowed. The G-virus seemed to be at its limit. Despite evolving, William was still being crushed by Renji's overwhelming strength.

As Renji landed the final blow, the G-virus didn't regenerate him. William lay motionless, like a corpse.

"Cut another sample. Burn the rest."

William looked dead, but Renji didn't want to risk him getting back up.

He sliced off a piece of tissue, then drenched the body in gasoline and set it ablaze. Watching the flames consume William, Annette's eyes filled with sorrow.

After all their years of research for Umbrella, it had come to this.

"Alright, William's dealt with. I'll bring Sherry to you. Ada, take Annette and grab whatever we need."

"You're leaving?"

"Yeah."

Ada stared at Renji. She hadn't expected him to trust her so freely.

By all logic, Annette was probably about to retrieve the original G-virus, and they also had William's samples. Without Renji around, Ada could've taken them and fled.

But after seeing how Renji beat William, she gave up on that idea.

She didn't want to spend the rest of her life being hunted.

As the two of them left, Renji began thinking about his next move.

With the G-virus sample secured, he hacked directly into Umbrella's internal system and began copying data using Red Queen. Annette likely lacked access clearance, but Red Queen easily extracted the research logs and intel.

Anything useful in the underground lab would be assigned to Ada to retrieve later.

Then, using his Thunder Fruit teleportation, Renji instantly appeared near the police station.

"Not here yet?"

At the police station entrance, the injured officer was still there—meaning Leon hadn't arrived. Renji had no idea whether Claire was inside, since she came through the back.

He ignored the wounded cop and slipped into the building, quickly locating the keys to get inside.

At that moment, Chief Brian Irons was inside, searching for Sherry.

This wasn't the first little girl he'd killed. After the outbreak, Irons knew he was doomed. Umbrella had abandoned him, and he was consumed by rage.

In his twisted logic, he wanted revenge on William's daughter—for being connected to the ones who ruined him.

If he couldn't survive, then neither would she.

"I found you."

Through a gap, Irons spotted Sherry hiding under a table. A cruel glint flashed in his eyes.

Finally, he had her.

Sherry would be the first step in his revenge.

"I found you too."

"…Who?"

Brian turned his head toward the voice behind him, startled. He knew better than anyone what state the police station was in. By now, either everyone was dead or they'd fled. Aside from himself and a few criminals, no one else should be here.

From the darkness, Renji stepped forward slowly, holding a dagger. Just as Brian raised his gun to shoot, the blade pierced his throat in an instant. "Within seven steps, the blade is faster."

Renji pulled the knife free from Brian's corpse, flicking off the blood. Then he crouched down and looked at Sherry. "Let's go. I made a deal with your mother to take you to her. You know Annette Birkin, right?"

Renji reached a hand toward the girl hiding under the desk, but didn't rush her.

Sherry looked at his outstretched hand, eyes flickering with fear. But when she saw the look in his eyes, something inside her softened. She wanted to believe him.

"You really know my mom?"

If he could say her name… maybe he did.

"Of course. Come on. If we don't go now, this place will get dangerous."

Renji wasn't worried—he could escape anytime. But if she hesitated, it might be too late for her.

"Mm-hmm."

She glanced at Brian lying in the blood and nodded. Crawling out from under the desk, her small body remained tensed to flee at any moment. If Renji made even the slightest suspicious move, she was ready to bolt.

Watching her cautious behavior, Renji chuckled inwardly. Vigilant—that was good.

"Let's go. One more person, and we're out of here."

He took the lead, keeping a safe distance so Sherry could follow comfortably. Then, around a corner—thud—a figure appeared, held up in the air by a Tyrant.

Jill's lips were bloody, eyes full of despair.

She had thought she could change everything. But now, at death's door, she realized she was just an ant. There was no repaying what she owed Renji.

"Miss, looks like you could use a hand."

A familiar voice rang in Jill's ears. The grip on her neck was suddenly severed, and she saw Renji smiling beside her. "Looks like you alone can't change this world after all."

With that, Renji turned and, with ease, dispatched the Nemesis—this seemingly unbeatable foe fell without resistance.

"Owe you again," Jill muttered, rubbing her throat as she stood.

"Yeah? But doesn't look like you plan to pay it back."

"Is your organization really different from Umbrella?"

Jill hesitated, then asked.

She knew she couldn't fight Umbrella alone.

And like he said, this world had already changed.

She needed allies—like-minded ones.

"That's right. I'm not creating bioweapons. I want to adapt the T-virus to enhance humans safely. And like I said, the world is already in chaos. Regular people can't fight like before."

Even Jill, in the games, had been infected. These protagonists were far from ordinary.

"I'll join you. But if your group turns out to be like Umbrella, I'll walk away without hesitation!"

"Of course. Shame you'll only be number three though."

Renji had originally wanted to make Jill his second-in-command. But then Ada stepped in.

"Sherry, we're heading out."

"Mm-hmm, okay, big brother."

Sherry obediently followed behind Renji.

Jill seemed to have many questions, but didn't know how to ask them.

"Go ahead—whatever you're holding in, just ask."

Seeing her hesitate, Renji chuckled. There was something amusing about Jill like this.

"Were you… modified?"

After holding it in for a long time, Jill finally asked.

Even Sherry looked curiously at Renji. His strength clearly wasn't human. Had he been modified?

Could it be that all the nations had started secret experiments?

Jill had assumed Umbrella was the sole culprit. But now it seemed far bigger. If even Interpol was involved in human enhancement, then this world truly was as Renji had said—beyond saving.

In that case, she might as well join him. At least from what she'd seen, Renji wasn't a madman like the others. He had saved her—twice.

"You could say that."

Renji hadn't been modified, but he couldn't explain it, so he let them think he had.

Besides, once he developed his refined T-virus, he would be modified anyway.

There was no need to hide it.

"I thought so. So, are all countries and groups researching this stuff?"

"Pretty much. No one can resist the temptation—enhanced strength, longer life. Some want weapons, some want immortality, some want world domination, others claim it's for peace. In any case, don't judge this world by how it used to be."

The world had changed. Looking at it through old lenses would only get you killed. With so many worlds merging together now, death was far too easy.
