Ember was shocked beyond words. It looked like everything happening in front of her was a dream, that she had to pinch herself before realizing it was no dream—it was actually happening.
The almighty Liam Gonzalez asking her to marry him after meeting her for the first time was absurd. She felt like it was a prank, but behold, Liam was waiting for a response or a reaction from her, and that alone rendered her speechless.
Ember wondered why he would want to marry someone he didn't have any knowledge about.
It felt like a trap, but she decided to be wise about it.
"Why would you marry a stranger you know nothing about?" Ember asked, treading carefully and at the same time not showing any emotions.
Liam watched her every single move, nevertheless.
"Let's say it's love at first sight. I was intrigued by you despite everything that happened, even though we did not meet at a convenient scene," Liam said with caution.
Liam tried not to raise any suspicion from her. He knew he was going to lie to her about loving her, but it seemed there was no other way.
"Is there any other hidden agenda behind your wanting to marry me without knowing anything about me?" Ember asked.
"No, my dear, my heart feels at peace seeing your beautiful face. Though we do not know each other, during our courtship we will know whether we are compatible or not," Liam explained briefly.
Ember just stared at him in silence.
"Just give me a chance, and let me prove myself to you," Liam pleaded gently.
Liam could not bring himself to tell her that he just wanted to marry her to save himself one competitor. Because marrying Ember would make her father automatically back down from aspiring for the presidential seat, he did not want to hurt her feelings more when her family was already doing worse.
Ember watched Liam carefully. She could not trust him fully. She knew about the presidential position Liam and her father were competing for.
Ember knew she had to tread with caution with Liam, but she decided to take his offer. She was not valued in her father's house. Her younger brother Jonathan was pampered and treated like a king, while she was the black sheep of her family.
She would be insulted and sneered at by her own family. It was better she got married to him and got away from her family for good than to be humiliated by her parents over and over again.
Ember decided to marry him but decided to delay her response to his request in order to keep her pride and dignity.
"I've heard you, Mr. Liam. I'll think about your proposal," Ember smiled.
"Very well, I shall wait for your response. It was an honour meeting you," Liam beamed, kissing her knuckles.
Ember giggled, watching him kiss her knuckles. Who could have actually imagined it? It felt too real to be a dream.
"Are you going back home to your parents?" Liam asked.
"Would you want me to stay?" Ember inquired.
"Won't they be worried about you?" Walter asked after keeping quiet this whole time.
"My parents don't even care if I live to see the next day. They hate me that much," Ember bitterly said.
"I'm sorry for reminding you. You can stay if you want," Liam said apologetically.
"I appreciate your kind gesture. Thank you for your hospitality," Ember smiled.
"You're welcome, dear. This is your home. Make yourself comfortable," Liam urged her in order to ease her mind.
"Walter, please show her the other guest rooms. Let her choose the one she would love to occupy," Liam instructed.
"Oh no sir, that won't be necessary," Ember replied.
Looking at her eyes, Liam saw that her eyes spoke of hesitation and tension. He was doing everything to make her feel comfortable. Or was he overdoing it? he thought to himself.
"Ember, please, I insist. I wasn't joking when I said this is your home," Liam blurted.
"Thank you, sir," Ember voiced while being taken away by Walter.
...
The position of the president was still vacant. Liam was trying his best, but the competition he had were also not willing to back down, making it extremely difficult for him to accomplish his goals, giving way to frustration.
"The overload of work today isn't funny," Liam frowned, seeing the excessive critical documents placed on his table.
"Miss Silver," Liam called to his secretary.
"Yes, boss," Silver replied joyfully.
Silver pushed up her skirt, causing her fresh thighs to become obvious, and opened one of the buttons on her blouse to reveal a part of her juicy oranges.
She had been craving hard to be in Liam's bed, but he had always been cold-hearted towards women and proved a hard nut to crack. But today was her lucky day—or so she thought.
"I'm here, sir," Silver said, creating awareness of her entrance while swaying her hips in a bid to seduce Liam.
Liam frowned, seeing her exposed body. Her thighs were very much in view, and her oranges were honestly a sight to behold, but Liam did not fancy any of this.
"Miss Silver, is this how you dress to work? This is a corporate firm, not some pub house," Liam scoffed.
"I'm sorry, sir, but everywhere feels so hot," Silver replied seductively, removing another button on her blouse, showing off her lacy bra.
"The next time you show up in my office looking like this will be the last day you'll work in this firm," Liam lashed at Silver, shocking her.
Silver hurriedly adjusted her dress in pain and anguish. She had already imagined Liam on top of her, giving it to her the way only he could do, but it could only happen in her dreams. It was obvious Liam had no interest in her, and it pained her deeply.
Liam was getting frustrated—the workload in the office, the large number of women that he had no interest in trying to seduce him on a daily basis. He was getting tired, and he felt like he was going to have a severe headache.
"I apologize, sir, for my misbehavior," Silver replied, now looking well-dressed.
"Who dropped these documents here?" Liam asked, ignoring her apology.
"The head of the CEOs gave me these files to give you and instructed that you should work on these files and present them the day after tomorrow," she hastily replied.
"You can go," Liam sighed, seeing he had a lot to do and needed no distractions.
FEW HOURS LATER.
After working for hours, Liam was exhausted and decided to go home.
"Silver, please cancel all my appointments for today. I am exhausted," Liam wailed, walking out of his office like someone who could fall on the floor any moment.
"OK, sir. Take care," Silver winked.
Liam just ignored her. He had no time for her flirting. He walked out of the empire. Unknown to him, there were unknown gunmen waiting outside for him.
On the other hand, Walter was working tirelessly at the Gonzalez mansion. His cell phone kept on ringing in his room, but Walter was so busy he could not leave the sitting room and take the call.
"Don't worry, sir. I'll take the call," Ember smiled, relieving Walter.
"Oh, thank you, dear. You're one in a million," Walter beamed.
Ember went over to take the call.
"Hello," Ember said, answering the call.
"Hello. Good day. This is G's Empire's security. Mr. Liam has been shot," the unknown man said in panic.
Ember, horrified and shocked by the news, dropped the cell phone on the floor, shattering it.
