Audrey’s P.O.V

The rhythm of normal life crept back like a ghost.

Emails. Coffee. Meetings. More emails.

I returned to work after my sabbatical as if nothing had changed, but everything had. I slipped back into the routine like sliding into an old coat — one that used to fit perfectly but now felt stiff at the shoulders and threadbare at the seams.

My office looked the same. The view hadn’t moved. But I wasn’t the same woman who’d left.

There was a new weight I carried now. Not crushing — just constant. A dull ache in my chest that flared every time my phone buzzed and it wasn’t him.

Not that he wasn’t around. Drew was still here. Still waking up beside me. Still pouring milk over Ian’s cereal and tying his shoes with that quiet reverence that made my heart catch. Still sitting on the other end of the couch at night, close but not touching.

He hadn’t touched me since that night.
