CHAPTER 6

Chapter 6 – Sujin's Little Devils Strike Again!

The people of Sujin Village had learned two things over the past year.

First, if you heard giggles and the sound of scampering feet, it was already too late.

Second, where Lin Yue went, trouble followed like a puppy with sticky hands and a plan.

Today's mischief started with a cabbage. Well, technically, it started with Granny Fu chasing a goose that stole her hairpin—but the gang found the cabbage first.

"Y'all thinking what I'm thinking?" Chun Hei grinned, holding the oversized cabbage like it was a sacred treasure.

"We roll it down the slope and make it look like a runaway alien egg?" Lin Yue guessed.

"No," said Meimei, munching. "We eat it."

"Noooo," Jiajia interrupted dramatically. "We put it in the well and scream that the water's cursed!"

The group paused.

Then Lin Yue clapped. "Yes. That one!"

Operation: Cabbage Curse commenced immediately.

Chun Hei lured some nosy boys away from the well with a fake 'wrestling match' flyer. Meimei stood watch, holding Granny Zhao's squeaky sandals like a weapon. Lin Yue and Jiajia worked fast—dropping the cabbage in, stirring the water a little, and pouring red plum juice down the side.

Then, Lin Yue jumped back and screamed.

"THE WATER'S BLEEDING!"

Chaos. Pure, ridiculous chaos.

Within ten minutes, half the village was gathered. One woman fainted. Old Uncle Wei claimed it was a sign from the gods. Someone started burning incense.

Lin Yue and her gang watched from behind a bush, shaking with laughter.

"This is wrong," Meimei whispered. "So wrong."

"I regret nothing," Lin Yue replied, biting her sleeve to keep from squealing.

But of course, like all good crimes, they were eventually caught.

It was the goose again.

The same one from earlier, now suspiciously calm, casually walked over to their hiding spot—and honked.

Snitch.

Three minutes later, Mama Lin arrived.

And when Mama Lin arrived... things got serious.

"Lin Yue!" she boomed.

Lin Yue popped out of the bush slowly. "Hi, Mama."

"What's this about cursed water? And is that plum juice?!"

Lin Yue scratched her cheek, thinking hard. "Um... science experiment?"

Mama Lin pinched the bridge of her nose. "You are grounded for three days."

Chun Hei stepped out. "We all did it! Punish us equally!"

"Me too," said Meimei, raising her hand.

"Me three!" said Jiajia.

Mama Lin looked at all of them, then sighed and muttered, "A gang of future CEOs, I swear..."

Despite the scolding, the gang didn't regret a thing. That night, after sneaking into Lin Yue's room, they laid on her bed whispering about the next idea:

"Let's dye all the chickens pink."

"No, let's pretend we're fortune tellers and make up love stories for people!"

"What about planting weird messages in the adults' shoes?!"

Lin Yue laughed, her gem-blue eyes twinkling. This—this was what being a kid felt like.
