Chapter 7 – The Eve of Change
Part One: One Last Adventure
"Tomorrow you'll be ancient," Chun Hei teased, dangling a string of dried noodles like streamers. "A whole decade old!"
"I'll still be younger than your brain cells," Lin Yue shot back, flicking a pebble at her.
The gang burst into giggles, snuggled up under the village's old fig tree, planning one final mischief before Lin Yue's birthday.
Their target?
Auntie Wen's prized scarecrow—fashioned lovingly to look like her "ideal man," complete with a fake mustache, apron, and noodle rolling pin.
"I say we give him a glow-up," Jiajia suggested. "Add makeup. Maybe some fishnet stockings?"
"Too subtle," said Meimei. "Let's give him abs. Big, sparkly abs."
They spent the next hour sneaking into Auntie Wen's field, giggling as they glued glitter to the scarecrow's belly, tied a headband around its forehead, and stuck a tiny paper sign to his chest:
"Husband #3: Ready to Cook AND Cuddle."
By the time the moon had risen, Sujin's little devils were rolling with laughter, their cheeks sore and stomachs empty.
They didn't know it, but this would be the last prank they'd pull as the old Lin Yue.
Because something... was coming.

Part Two: Midnight Memory
The village was quiet. The only sound was the creaking of bamboo in the wind, and the soft flickering of the old TV in the living room.
Lin Yue lay in bed, her hair messy and tangled from the day's fun, her head resting on her arms.
But her eyes were wide open.
And her heart was racing.
A chill ran down her spine as the world seemed to pause.
Ding.
A chime echoed in her mind.
[ System syncing with host's soul… 99%... 100%. ]
[ Welcome back, Lin Yue. ]
Suddenly, her mind burst open—memories flooding like a storm.
Office cubicles. Cold nights. Cheap coffee. Emails. Loneliness. A ring tossed on the floor. A voice whispering "you're not good enough." A car crash. Silence.
Lin Yue sat up, breathless.
She remembered.
Everything.
Her past life.
Her regrets.
Her final wish—to live freely, to love without pain, and to play the game instead of being played.
She looked down at her small hands, her tiny fingers trembling slightly.
"I'm... back," she whispered.
She didn't cry. She didn't panic.
Instead, she smiled faintly.
The room hadn't changed. Her old TV still blinked in the corner. Her hair was still messily tied with a purple ribbon. The prank from earlier still made her lips twitch.
But she had changed.
Inside, she wasn't just nine anymore. She was twenty-nine years old, reborn in a child's body, and with that... came clarity.
She got up, walked to the small mirror, and stared at her reflection.
Blue eyes, sky-blue hair, round cheeks.
"Ten years old," she murmured. "Huh."
She turned, flopped back on her bed, and stared at the ceiling.
"I'll act like myself for now," she said softly. "But soon... I'll start playing the real game."
Tomorrow, the world would still see the mischievous Lin Yue.
But a storm had woken beneath the surface.
And this time, she was going to win.
