Chapter 10 – Daddy's Having a Baby?!
It started with whispers. Whispers that tickled Lin Yue's sharp little ears as she passed through the village square.
"…Her husband's glowing, isn't he?"
"Morning sickness already? That fast?"
Yue blinked. Glowing? Sick? She leaned closer behind the old well.
"That's what happens when the man gets pregnant with a strong wife's baby, duh. Hormones fly like bees."
Yue dropped her stick.
Pregnant?
She sprinted home, shoes slapping the dirt.
The front door flew open. "MOM!" she yelled, skidding into the house.
Her mother, calmly sipping tea on the couch, raised an eyebrow. "Yes?"
"Is Dad— IS DAD PREGNANT?!"
Her mother blinked. Then nodded casually. "Oh, you heard. Yes. Three months along."
"THREE?!"
Lin Yue dramatically fell to her knees. "I haven't even seen a bump!"
"He's been wearing loose robes."
"MY DAD IS GONNA POP OUT A BABY?!"
Her mother chuckled. "He's not a balloon, Yue."
Yue scrambled up and bolted into the bedroom, where her father lay propped on pillows, nibbling dried mango slices with a dreamy smile.
"DAD! Why didn't you tell me?!"
He blinked, startled. "I… I wanted to surprise you on your birthday, sweetie."
"Surprise?! You were gonna surprise me with a whole human baby?!"
Her father pouted, belly hidden under a comfy knit shirt. "Well… it was your mother's idea."
"MOM!"
From the other room: "It's called family expansion, Yue!"
Yue flopped on the bed beside her father, still gasping dramatically. "You— you're gonna… grow a human. In there. That's… that's insane. I'm gonna be a big sister?"
Her father smiled. "That's right. Are you excited?"
Yue's face twisted. "I… I don't know! I just turned ten yesterday! My life's changing too fast!"
Her father reached out, stroking her head. "You'll be amazing, Yue. You're strong and brave and way more mature than most kids your age."
She blinked, suddenly softening. "Really?"
"Of course. Besides, I'll need someone to help with foot rubs and mango cravings."
Yue sighed like the weight of the world had landed on her shoulders. "Fine. I accept this noble duty. But I get naming rights if it's a boy."
"Nope," her mom called. "That's mine."
Yue groaned and flopped onto her dad's belly. "Just don't let him be annoying."
Her dad laughed. "He'll probably worship you. You'll be the cool big sister."
Yue smirked. "Darn right I will."
Later that night, she gathered her gang for an emergency meeting under the village's tallest mango tree.
"Girls," she said, hands on hips. "My dad's pregnant."
The gang stared.
"Whaaaat?!" Chun Hei screamed.
"Can I come touch his belly?" Meimei asked.
"No! That's weird!"
"Are you gonna help name it?"
"I tried. Got denied."
They all sat in stunned silence. Then, Meimei leaned in seriously.
"…Wait. If your mom can make babies… does that mean she and your dad—"
"NOPE!" Yue jumped up. "Meeting over! No more thoughts!"
As the gang burst into laughter, Lin Yue walked home, hand on her chest.
A sibling… huh. Guess I'm not the baby anymore.
She smiled.
But deep inside, something tickled — a quiet joy, a new kind of warmth. Her weird little system-voice said nothing this time. But Yue knew: her world had just gotten a bit bigger… and maybe even better.
