Honestly, I was surprised by how enjoyable this series was. Ernest the main character is a pragmatist survivor at his core. His character conflicts with the authoritarian Empire he serves, leading to tension in how his actions will play out. There are really four lead characters and each of them contrasts and compliment each other in enjoyable ways. The author has set up many bread crumbs for a grander plot but it's really difficult to see when and where things will pivot in a grand direction. Everything that seems trivial ends up at least somewhat meaningful. That's something this series excels at. As of now I'm about 70 or so chapters in. It is a bit disappointing at times for our perspective to be so limited but I have no doubt Ernest will ultimately grasp the bigger picture. He is after all, a young adolescent. I can't even really predict the plot. The author provides many clues but the larger powers at play are for the most part shrouded in complete mystery.
