Chapter 23: A Remnant’s Name

The battlefield still echoed with fractured time as the Remnants faded, but one did not vanish.

He stood alone, cloak in tatters, mask cracked in half revealing a single amber eye. He did not attack. Instead, he raised his hand slowly and spoke—not in threat, but in memory.

> "I was Yeo. Once. Long ago in a thread that broke."

Yeo and Leiran froze.

"You're… a Remnant. But you're not like the others," Yeo said, cautiously lowering his weapon.

The figure nodded. "Most Remnants are echoes of ruin. I am the first who remembered regret."

He removed the rest of his mask. The face was unmistakable—Yeo's, but older. Hardened. Exhausted. The kind of man shaped by war and a thousand wrong decisions.

"I am called Kael," he said. "I was the one who tried to destroy the Chronicle… and failed."

Kael told them the truth: each time a Fragment bonds with a soul, it creates a divergence. Most versions of Yeo fall. Few rise. The Chronicle was never a gift; it was a trap designed to find the one version of Yeo who could survive them all—to become something that could hold the Aeon Core without breaking the world again.

"I came not to kill you," Kael said, looking Yeo in the eyes. "I came to see if this version could become more than I did."

Leiran didn't trust him. "Why now? Why show yourself?"

"Because something worse is coming," Kael said. "Not a Remnant. Not a god. But the World-Eater. A being born from failed timelines. It's feeding on collapse—and your choices are drawing it near."

Before he could explain further, a distortion rippled through the sky. Reality flickered like torn fabric. Kael gritted his teeth.

"They found me. I don't have much time."

He placed a hand on Yeo's shoulder. A rush of memory surged—Kael's battles, Kael's losses, Kael's failure to save the world.

Then Kael whispered, "Find the Mirror of Origin. Only there can you decide what you will be."

With that, Kael vanished—pulled back into the folds of broken time.

Yeo collapsed to his knees, overwhelmed. The Chronicle of Ash burned with new runes.
