The forest they entered was unlike any Yeo had seen—its trees pulsed faintly with light, and the shadows moved even when the wind stood still.
They followed the glowing runes now etched in the Chronicle of Ash. Kael's final words haunted Yeo: "Find the Mirror of Origin."
Leiran walked beside him, unusually quiet. The encounter with Kael had shaken even her.
"I don't like this place," she whispered. "It feels like… something's watching us."
"It is," said a voice from nowhere.
Yeo and Leiran drew their weapons instantly. The air shimmered, and from it stepped a being cloaked in flowing robes of black mist, its face hidden behind an obsidian mask.
"I am called Aelreth, the Watcher," it said. "Guardian of the Mirror. No one approaches it without being seen."
Yeo kept his stance firm. "Then you know why we're here."
"I know why he sent you," Aelreth replied. "Kael. The Fractured One."
The name echoed with disdain. Aelreth turned slowly and gestured toward the path. "Follow me, but know this: the Mirror does not show truth—it shows possibility. And possibility is a burden."
As they walked, Aelreth explained that the Mirror was a relic of the first Aeon War, used by the gods to choose champions. But it had a cost—those who looked too deeply often shattered under the weight of who they could have been.
Finally, they arrived at a clearing where time itself seemed to bend. A glass-like structure floated above a pool of still light, endless in depth.
"The Mirror of Origin," Aelreth said. "Place your hand upon it, and it will reflect the path not yet chosen."
Yeo stepped forward. The Chronicle glowed in response.
As his fingers touched the Mirror, a wave of force knocked Leiran back—and Yeo was pulled in.
He opened his eyes in a world not his own.
Buildings were reduced to ash. Statues of him—of Kael—stood shattered. In the distance, a figure stood atop a throne of bone.
Yeo gasped.
It was him, older, crueler, crowned in flames.
"Welcome, me," the figure said. "Let me show you what happens when you choose power… over people."
The Mirror had begun.
