Confrontation with a Guard

I got slower as I approached the gates. The guards stood ready, their halberds lowered just enough to block my path. One of them looked like he hadn't slept in a day, eyes half-lidded, voice rough.

"Show me your Identity card," he demanded.

I took out my Identity card and handed it over. He looked from the card up to me, then again back to the card

"You are Baroness Serena Vaelmont. Of Bordertown?"

Without waiting for my answer he started chuckling and gave me my ID back. All that while I had to forcefully suppress the urge to punch his sleepy face.

I knew that Bordertown was looked down upon. I knew it, I mean it's a village merely made to protect the Kingdom, and the only ones living there are those too poor to pay taxes and the criminals.

No wonder people looked down on it.

But still, I am the Baroness of the very village they dared to mock. How could I not be enraged?

Another problem is that this matter was way too urgent to get stopped by the prejudgement of this lowly guard.

So I put on a forced smile, and addressed his attitude.

"What seems to be the problem, Guard? I don't see a problem with my verification, so I should be allowed to enter now. I don't have time for this, the matter is urgent. For me and for this Kingdom."

But the Guard just smirked at me and didn't budge even a little

"The King is too busy to attend to your matters Baroness. I am sorry but you'll have to visit another time."

It would've been plausible, if I didn't know full well just how lazy the King is for him to be 'busy'. And than there was his face. This face that just asked for a beat down.

Maybe my nerves were already strained due to the situation with that thing but I really wanted to let go of some frust.

My veins started visibly pulsing on my forehead.

"Sir, with all due respect, lying to a noble can be... quite dangerous. This matter is of high importance for this Kingdom."

I wanted to teach him a lesson, but I was afraid I may get into trouble for injuring a royal guard. It may delay my audience with the King, and I couldn't take such a risk.

But of course that rat-like looking guard had more to say as his grey eye's met mine.

"Like I said, today is a bad date. The King is too busy dealing with more urgent matters than you could ever understand, so if you may leave"

I decided to slightly provoke him, since that was the easiest way to deal with him.

I took out my Vaelor, similar to a Zulfiqar in its appearance but smaller and easier to handle. One of my beloved twinblades.

I pointed the splitted tip of the blade at his throat and a smirk starts forming on my face

"The act of lying to a noble is considered grave and would have you in jail for quite a long time. But if I killed you right now, it would bring me some minor troubles, but since I merely brought you to justice I would be free by tomorrow."

I poked his throat with the blade, just enough to draw some blood. I could see the Guard having second doubts now as a frown appeared on his forhead.

He was gulping down a lot of saliva, he was probably fearing for his life. Suddenly though his smirk returned and he steadied his stance.

"My dear baroness, how could I ever lie to you? I can't change the King's schedule. And even if I was lying,"

He looked at me with his arrogant smirk once again

"How could you ever know? If I said the truth and you kill me, you would get hanged or at least put in jail for life. I don't think you want to risk that, do you?"

I smirked, as he reacted like I imagined he would. Since he had doubts, I now only have to shatter his imagination of being in control by seeming like a maniac.

"My friend," I now drew a slightly red line across his throat.

"See, you angered me quite a bit today. Jailtime for life for taking your life? That's a fair deal if you ask me."

I took the blade of his throat and got ready to swing it towards his throat. Suddenly, his face was cold, and even the profuse sweating stopped.

He was a mere knight, he knew that in a Swordfight, he would lose. It would be nothing less than an execution. So he dropped his halbard and suddenly became compliant with a smile on his face.

"I-I suppose your request is more urgent than the King's meeting.

You can enter, the King will surely have the time to hear you out."

He rushed towards the lever, signaling his subordinate to take the other, and together they pulled it. The great Palace gates finally opened up. A knight came and escorted me to the throne room.

It was time to meet the King once again.
