Hildr woke up a few hours later. She was lying on a small bed that barely left enough space for her to turn her body.
She looked at the ceiling without saying a single word. It was already clear that she was in the infirmary.
This was because of the strong smell of potions and the whiff of death that lingered in the air. This was the classic smell of a hospital or something similar.
She thought about what had just happened, and she could not understand how it was possible. The Stone of the Doomed that sat on her forehead was supposed to stop all this. It was more than powerful enough to interfere with the weave of fate, allowing her to circumvent the consequences of her refusal to bow to the bonds of fate.
She touched her forehead, and the stone was still there.
This stone not only protected her but also the other party involved in the bond. This was the reason Anastasia had not been affected at all and even barely had any information about the fact that she was bonded to Hildr, not until she had been told.
"You are finally awake," someone said. Hildr looked towards the voice, even though she already knew who it was.
The principal stood at the foot of the bed with her hands crossed over her chest. She was fuming with rage. She looked at Hildr with a barely concealed desire to kill her. Hildr had never understood this woman's hatred for her, but she did not care much at this moment. She had bigger problems to worry about.
"Do you know why I hate you and your kind?" the principal asked.
Hildr made herself more comfortable and closed her eyes.
"I do not need to know the reason for your foolishness. You think that your clan is superior to the rest. The other clans bow to your clan and show you some level of respect due to your claim that you descend from a god. Since this is your reason for feeling superior to other clans, I cannot blame you, since there is some evidence for your divine descent. Unfortunately for you, we, the children of night, are descendants of the Primordial Goddess Nyx. She is the most powerful goddess in the world. Even your god has to bow when he meets her. Since this is the case, you can hardly expect her descendant to bow to the descendants of the god who bows to her," said Hildr. The principal, Flavia Audax, was trembling with rage, but there was nothing she could do. Just outside the door stood Uluf, a powerful draugr who had allowed her to enter after being convinced for hours. He was listening to everything, and the moment the principal made a move against Hildr, Uluf would attack without any mercy. One should not look down on him just because the Night King had so easily kicked him away. That was something Uluf had accepted as a servant of the Night King.
Uluf was said to be the most powerful draugr after Hildr and her father.
The principal calmed down as fast as she had gotten angry. Even though she believed herself more powerful than Uluf, she understood that he was more than enough to stop her should she make any move against the little bastard before her.
"The reason I hate you is very simple, and it has nothing to do with your so-called goddess or anything like that. It is because you are the most selfish people among the Otherkind. You do not care who gets hurt as long as you get what you want. You completely lack respect for your betters, and on top of this, you look at other people as though they should be below you and never your equals. This is the reason I and many others hate your kind."
Hildr looked at the woman before her, and she could not come up with a single retort to her words. Hildr was fully aware that she was very selfish. Before doing anything, she always considered how she would benefit. This was who she was, and most draugr were the same. Hildr just kept quiet and waited for the woman to say her piece.
"The Shadows will be arriving in a few hours. We need to sort out this mess before it becomes more of a problem."
A few hours later, Hildr, Amelia, and Anastasia stood before the council. The principal brought out a few ancient items that had seen the rise and fall of empires. She placed them in a Sol circle that had been drawn on the floor. Each item had to be placed in a specific place for the summoning circle to work. When she was done, the principal shot out a wave of flames that were absorbed by the circle.
As it absorbed more of the flames, the circle became darker, and soon, shadows began writhing about the hall.
The hall was then suddenly covered in an explosion of darkness. This darkness was so thick that no light could penetrate it.
The darkness imploded and came together to form three dark figures that seemed to be made from the darkness itself. These figures did not have any shadows and seemed to absorb most of the light in the hall.
"We welcome the great Shadow," said the principal.
The shadows said nothing in reply, but everyone knew that they had to say this after summoning the shadows. If one were to forget to welcome them, there would be a bloodbath that very few could survive.
"We call upon the shadows to make known the connection between these three people," she continued while pointing at Hildr and the other two girls.
By now, it had become clear that something was going on between these three.
Hildr hoped that it was not a bond between the three of them. This was because this would lead to a lot of trouble for her. She had been struggling to deal with just the one bond, and if she had two, she was not sure how she would deal with it.
The Shadows placed their hands on the three girls, and a few moments later, they announced the result. It was as Hildr had feared. She was bonded to two people at the same time.
