Back to the Storm

[Airport – Arrival Gate]

Adeline pulled her carry-on beside her, eyes scanning the busy terminal. Elias walked a few paces ahead, phone pressed to his ear.

She glanced at him, then whispered under her breath, "Back to hell."

Elias ended the call and looked over. "Car's waiting."

"I thought maybe you'd vanish again like usual."

He arched a brow. "And disappoint your conspiracy theories?"

Adeline gave a tight smile. "Too late for that."

They walked silently towards the door. Outside, the evening air was fresher. A black sedan idled.

As they settled into the backseat, she finally demanded, "Are you really not going to tell me what else you know?"

"I told you enough for now," Elias replied, staring out the window.

"Enough for you, maybe. Not for me."

He faced her. "What do you want me to tell you, Adeline? That your life was manipulated? That there are individuals who wanted you broken?"

She swallowed, eyes keen. "Yes."

Elias let out a sigh. "Then here's more: Luke wasn't the one who discovered you in the woods."

Her head jerked toward him. "What?"

"He claimed to have, but by the time he arrived, someone had already called it in anonymously. The timeline doesn't add up."

Adeline gazed at him, heart pounding. "You?"

"I was observing. From a distance enough not to be noticed. I didn't want him to spin it. But I knew that if I appeared with you, they'd cover it up."

"Why didn't you tell me when I awakened?"

"I didn't want you drawn back into his darkness."

"Too late," she grumbled. "He ensured that."

The vehicle slowed in front of her temporary residence—Charlotte's apartment.

Elias pushed open the door, then turned to her before exiting. "You want the rest of the truth, Adeline?"

She stared at him, shivering.

"Then prepare yourself. Because it only gets worse before it gets better.
