Pieces You Didn't Tell Me

[Charlotte's Apartment – Late Evening]

Adeline dumped her bag on the floor and removed her shoes. Lights were off aside from the kitchen. Charlotte crossed her legs at the counter and munched instant noodles from the pot.

"You're back early," Charlotte grunted, chewing.

Adeline didn't speak immediately. She just glared at her.

Charlotte blinked. "What? You look as if you'd seen a ghost."

Adeline took a step forward. "We need to talk."

"Okay?" Charlotte stepped down from the counter. "What happened?"

"You said you didn't know much about what occurred two years ago. That nobody did."

"I didn't. Nobody did."

"That's not true." Adeline's tone was icy. "You were present when I was abducted. You saw me that day."

Charlotte fell silent.

"Tell me I'm wrong," Adeline dared.

"I—" Charlotte stopped. "You were fighting with Luke. I hung back. I didn't think it was serious. Then you vanished."

"For two weeks, Char."

"I thought you fled!" Charlotte yelled. "You do that! You bottle all your feelings and vanish when you get hurt!"

Adeline's voice dipped. "So when I returned battered and scared, you still didn't question anything?

Charlotte turned away. "I. Luke said I shouldn't. That you'd had some sort of breakdown. That you needed to be left alone."

"And you listened to him?"

Charlotte's eyes welled up. "I was afraid. He said if I pushed things, I'd end up in trouble too."

"So you took his side over mine."

"I didn't take anyone's side," Charlotte breathed. "I just wanted things to return to normal."

Adeline's jaw tightened. "You made me think I was insane. You let them bury it."

"I'm sorry." Charlotte moved closer. "I didn't know how awful it was. I didn't know about the chains. Or the room. Or Elias—"

Adeline stood still. "What happened to Elias?"

Charlotte's face went white.

Adeline glared at her. "What. About. Elias?"

Charlotte stammered. "I—I mean, he was searching for you. I overheard Luke say he was snooping around. That's all."

You should have told me that months ago."

"I didn't think you'd believe me!"

Adeline took her coat again.

Charlotte shouted after her, frantically. "Where are you going?"

"To find the one person who hasn't lied to me.
