Nice start, immediately establishing who the character is and what higher forces are interested in them was a good way to bring in loyal readers, almost as a filter. 
The way you describe the characters is good as well. You gave each one that I saw so far easy to remember characteristics, while also having one or two quirks that made them instantly easy to remember.
The plot begins solid as well. As a reader, I'm interested in how the MC will succeed, but I also felt he was a bit too good on the ethic side. In his background, he was an expert manipulator and liar, but I am yet to see exactly what that means, since you only showed him using some manipulation tactics to ease the redhead up to him (at least until chapter 12, which is the one I'm starting to read currently).
It is a good way to subvert the underdog trope, make the underdog be someone of questionable morals, but still enough of a good person so that we, as readers, get invested.
