"There's a psychic locked up in here?"
Raven paused in surprise, but quickly put the pieces together. She turned to Alex with a puzzled look.
"Wait… you're talking about the White Queen, aren't you?"
Back on the cruise ship during the mission to capture Shaw, Charles had a brief telepathic clash with the White Queen—and he didn't gain even the slightest upper hand.
Her powers completely countered his.
Later, Charles and Erik went to the Soviet Union to apprehend the Black King, only to discover their intel was wrong. He was never there. Instead, the Black King had infiltrated a CIA base and massacred nearly everyone.
They failed to catch Shaw, but they didn't walk away empty-handed—they captured his right-hand woman: the White Queen.
She'd been detained at CIA headquarters ever since, with the agency in charge of her interrogation.
But unfortunately, her abilities were simply too overpowered. Not only could she manipulate minds, she could also transform her body into an unbreakable diamond form. The CIA had no way to deal with her.
They had no choice but to keep her locked up.
And they hadn't gotten a single useful piece of intel out of her.
"That's right. I'm talking about the White Queen," Alex confirmed with a nod. "Her psychic abilities will be extremely valuable to us in the future."
He didn't need to explain further. Raven understood perfectly well just how strategically important a psychic mutant could be—especially since Alex had mentioned before that they planned to build their own mutant faction someday.
A powerful telepath like the White Queen would be a cornerstone asset.
"Raven, I know she used to work for Shaw. But Shaw's dead now. Whatever grudges existed between us should die with him," Alex continued, his tone serious. "As long as she's willing to join us, she's one of our own."
"You don't have to convince me, Alex. I'm not Charles," Raven shrugged, clearly unconcerned.
She really didn't seem to care much about old grievances.
And thinking back, it made sense—after all, in the original storyline, wasn't Raven the one who helped Erik break into this very base and free the White Queen?
Unlike Charles, Raven wasn't so hung up on idealism.
"Great!"
Alex grinned, then swung the car door open. "In that case, let's get to work."
"Of course," Raven replied, eyes gleaming. She stepped out as well.
With a thought, she shifted into the form of Agent Moira.
Having spent a good amount of time around the CIA operative, Raven had studied her well. Mimicking Moira was practically second nature now.
Even someone intimately familiar with Moira would have a hard time spotting any discrepancies.
And so, Alex and Raven strolled straight into the CIA headquarters without encountering even the slightest resistance.
"Hey, Agent Moira! How's it going?"
"I need to get some sleep."
"Didn't you just leave?"
"I wish. Since when do we get to decide when we leave?"
"Who's that with you?"
"A key witness. The Director assigned me to personally escort him."
A few colleagues greeted her along the way, but Raven deflected all their questions with casual ease.
Her performance was flawless—so seamless that even Alex had to admit he was impressed.
With her shapeshifting and quick thinking, Raven was born for this kind of infiltration.
This—this was how her powers were meant to be used.
They slipped past the staff effortlessly. Once inside the elevator, Raven turned to Alex.
"We're in. Now what? How are we going to find where they're keeping the White Queen? Please tell me you actually have a plan."
"A plan?" Alex smiled cryptically. "Don't need one."
As he spoke, he activated his X-ray vision, scanning through the entire CIA facility in seconds.
In an instant, he saw exactly where the White Queen was being held.
But that wasn't all.
He also found someone else—someone he hadn't expected to see.
An old rival: Copycat.
Her ability was essentially a stronger version of Raven's—definitely someone worth recruiting. Without hesitation, Alex made up his mind.
He'd take both the White Queen and Copycat with him.
He withdrew his gaze and casually pressed the elevator button for the 14th floor. Then, with a confident smile, he turned to Raven.
"I know exactly where she is."
"You what? How?"
Raven stared at him, stunned.
She'd been with him nearly every day for the past week. She hadn't seen him do any recon whatsoever.
In that moment, she suddenly realized—Alex had grown more mysterious. The man she thought she knew was no longer so easy to read.
"Maybe… it's just because I'm too handsome?" Alex replied with a wink, brushing it off with a grin.
Raven rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed, but didn't press further.
Just like that, the two of them reached the 14th floor, chatting like they were on a leisurely stroll through their own home.
But as soon as they stepped out, they were stopped.
A security checkpoint waited just outside the elevator, manned by two armed agents.
"I'm here to question one of the detainees," Raven stepped forward, staying in character.
"I didn't receive any such orders," one of the guards said, instantly suspicious.
The other agent picked up the phone to confirm.
BANG!
Before the call could go through, Alex struck. With a single punch, he shattered the reinforced glass and slammed his fist into the agent, sending him flying across the room into the wall. The man crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
"You—what the hell are—"
Bang!
The second guard didn't last any longer.
CRASH!
With a kick, Alex blasted the metal door open.
"Wow. Alex, you are ridiculously violent," Raven muttered, stepping over the wreckage to follow him down the hallway.
Eventually, Alex stopped in front of a specific door.
He'd found her.
