Chapter 51: Are You Kidding Me?
"Is it really that important? Can't you just tell me now?"
Chen Xiaoxiao asked, her brows furrowed with genuine puzzlement.
"It really is! You'll definitely be interested. It's not something we can talk about over the phone."
Xu Fei insisted, blinking rapidly, his expression unreadable.
"And you're sure I'll be interested?"
Chen Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
"Absolutely. I promise!"
Xu Fei declared with an unshakable certainty.
"Alright, but if I come all the way there and find it's not important, or I'm not even slightly intrigued heh! You're in for it, Little Xu!"
Despite her suspicions, Chen Xiaoxiao couldn't help but be drawn in. She had known Xu Fei long enough to recognize the glimmer of secrecy in his eyes, something was definitely being kept from her.
But this wasn't just a casual prank he wouldn't bring her to the Flying-type Gym in Shantou City if it wasn't serious. After all, this wasn't some café meet-up or a chance encounter at a Poké Mart.
Still, as he played up the mystery, she instinctively threw in a threat half joking, half serious.
"Of course. I guarantee it'll be worth your time!"
Xu Fei exhaled with relief the moment Chen Xiaoxiao agreed, his voice more reassuring now.
Once the call ended, Chen Xiaoxiao left the Pokémon Center, stepping into the light breeze of Shantou City and walking briskly toward the Flying Gym.
In most cities, Pokémon Gyms are constructed close to the Pokémon Center. That's not a coincidence the Center forms the heart of urban infrastructure, and Gym Leaders, as the primary defense force of a city, are stationed where they can protect both trainers and the local population in case of sudden threats, like Team Rocket's surprise attacks in Vermilion City or Team Galactic's ploys in Sinnoh.
Also, it provides immediate access for challengers to heal their Pokémon after tough battles.
Because she had been at the Pokémon Center, it took Chen Xiaoxiao less than five minutes to reach the front steps of Shantou City's Flying Gym, known for its high skylight dome and the occasional sight of Pidgeot soaring over its rooftop aviary.
"I'm sorry, the Gym is currently unavailable to the public. We're closed for today. Please return tomorrow if you wish to challenge the Leader."
Just as she approached, the front desk attendant stationed by the entrance raised her hand, blocking her path with a polite but firm tone.
"Hi, my name is Chen Xiaoxiao. I think I have an appointment? Maybe with Curator Zhang?"
Chen Xiaoxiao answered uncertainly, recalling that Xu Fei had mentioned Zhang, the Gym Leader, would be coordinating something today.
Technically, Xu Fei had made the arrangements, but since it was through Zhang, it counted, right?
She also found it odd that the Gym would be shut down entirely today. What sort of event required that?
"Oh! Ms. Chen, my apologies yes, the Gym Leader has been expecting you. Please come in."
The receptionist's demeanor changed instantly. She ushered Chen Xiaoxiao inside with a quick bow, then pressed a hidden panel next to the door, which slid shut behind them with a soft mechanical hum.
What the !?
"Please follow me."
The receptionist turned and began walking briskly down a narrow corridor lit by ceiling spotlights, her tone businesslike.
Chen Xiaoxiao, though confused, said nothing. Are they closing the Gym just for me? she thought, frowning. This feels like a setup.
Still, the receptionist was just a staff member. No point in pressing her for details.
Eventually, they entered the Gym's main arena a large open field with wind turbines at the corners, and the polished stone floor glinting under the spotlights. Familiar figures waited ahead.
Curator Zhang, the Gym's leader, stood by the referee platform. Beside him were his son Zhang Guoxiong who had once placed third in the regional youth tournament and Xu Fei.
Chen Xiaoxiao's gaze swept the gymnasium stands. A dozen or so people dressed in Flying Gym uniforms junior trainers and staff were already seated like an audience waiting for a performance.
The receptionist politely gestured toward the center of the arena, then quickly took a seat among the staff.
Chen Xiaoxiao stepped forward, approaching the three awaiting men. As she did, she studied their expressions.
Curator Zhang's face was stern, his jaw clenched.
Zhang Guoxiong, in contrast, was practically bouncing with energy, his fists clenched and eyes gleaming with anticipation.
Xu Fei?
His eyes kept darting first to her, then to the floor, then to his shoes. Suspicious. Very suspicious.
This is not normal. This is beyond not normal.
Chen Xiaoxiao's internal alarms blared.
"Okay, Xu Fei. We're here. Now talk."
Her voice was cold, her tone direct. She scanned the group again. Something about this whole situation felt staged.
Curator Zhang didn't speak. Instead, his expression grew darker. Without a word, he turned and went to sit silently on the sidelines.
Zhang Guoxiong, grinning like a kid about to unwrap a present, ran to the referee's box and signaled readiness.
What did Zhang Guoxiong do when he ran to the referee's seat?
He sat down with exaggerated excitement, eyes locked on both Xu Fei and Chen Xiaoxiao, practically bouncing in anticipation clearly expecting something dramatic.
Seeing this scene, Chen Xiaoxiao finally realized she had walked into a setup.
"Chen Xiaoxiao, let's have a Pokémon battle!"
Xu Fei inhaled deeply before calling out the challenge.
Really?!
Chen Xiaoxiao was instantly furious.
This—this is what he called important?
He swore it was something critical… and it turns out to be a battle request?
"Xu Fei!!!"
Miss Chen Xiaoxiao felt utterly deceived. She couldn't help screaming, her voice echoing through the gym.
As for what kind of "lady" she was supposed to be?
Please. That concept didn't even exist in her personality profile.
The phrase "Are you kidding me!!!" exploded from her mouth like a Hyper Beam.
In the ten years since she had transmigrated into this world, never once had she been played like this.
Chen Xiaoxiao was seething.
Her pupils flared with an intense azure glow, and a wave of psychic pressure surged from her body, causing the gym's air to thicken unnaturally.
The blue light surrounding her flickered wildly, as if her inner Psychic powers were on the verge of spiraling out of control pulsing like a wavering Confusion attack barely restrained by sheer will.
Everyone in the gym felt a sudden pressure crash onto their chests, like a powerful Telekinesis field had wrapped around them.
All eyes shifted toward Chen Xiaoxiao in horror she no longer felt human, but like a wild, rampaging Psychic-type Pokémon. Perhaps something akin to a Mewtwo before restraint.
Xu Fei was directly in the path of her energy he felt her wrath like a Psystrike crashing down.
He wanted to speak but found that his body wouldn't respond, locked by the force of her unintentional Psychic.
A chilling thought rose unbidden in Xu Fei's mind: Am I going to die right here?
As if reacting to the danger of its Trainer, a Poké Ball on Xu Fei's waist snapped open with a sharp burst of red light.
A majestic Pokémon with fox-like grace landed on the battlefield—its cream-colored fur rippling, ruby-red eyes glowing with restrained power, and nine flowing tails arched elegantly behind it.
Ninetales!
With Ninetales' arrival, the temperature in the gym spiked noticeably—its Drought ability kicked in, making the air shimmer with heatwaves.
But unlike its usual poise, Ninetales now stood with fur bristling like sharp pins—its eyes locked on Chen Xiaoxiao, glowing faintly with counter-psychic energy.
Just as the atmosphere grew unbearable
Another red light burst from Chen Xiaoxiao's side.
Gardevoir, sensing her Trainer's unstable emotion and psychic surge, leapt onto the field unbidden, her gown-like body glowing blue with surging energy. Her eyes narrowed as she positioned herself protectively in front of Chen Xiaoxiao, matching Ninetales' pressure with her own.
Gardevoir's psychic signature soared she was no ordinary partner, but a powerful empath deeply attuned to her Trainer's stress. She stared Ninetales down, eyes blazing with resolve.
The two Pokémon stood locked in a silent but intense psychic duel.
Under Gardevoir's unwavering gaze, Ninetales stiffened, letting out a cautious, warning growl.
But just as the tension neared breaking point
Another Poké Ball on Xu Fei's belt glowed bright red.
"Roar!!"
A massive figure exploded onto the field, landing with the weight of a small earthquake.
Orange fur shimmered like molten steel. Steel cuffs encircled powerful legs, a flowing white mane resembling sacred smoke billowed behind, and from its muzzle came a noble, thunderous growl.
Its crimson eyes glinted as heat radiated off its massive body.
Entei.
Summoned by the dire emotional atmosphere, Entei landed in a burst of flame. Its sacred fire aura filled the gym like a wave of holy heat, colliding directly with Gardevoir's immense psychic field.
The temperature soared even further like being inside a volcano and storm at the same time.
Ninetales instantly felt the change. Though still proud, it took a step back—the pressure from Entei was overwhelming. The mighty Legendary Pokémon's aura completely drowned out its own.
A deeper, heavier psychic suppression descended.
And then
"Leo!!"
Xu Fei's voice finally broke through, choked but desperate, as his body began to regain movement under the growing clash of powerful auras.
