Chapter 53: Togekiss's Revenge

"Togekiss, use Attract! Follow with Air Slash!"

"Firebeast, hit yourself with Ember, then follow up with Flamethrower!"

At the referee's signal, both Chen Xiaoxiao and Xu Fei issued their commands simultaneously.

Since this wasn't a formal Pokémon League match, no strict attack order had been established. The battle was a free-form exchange where both Trainers relied on instinct and timing rather than turn-based initiative.

"Ah, she's using the Attract tactic again…"

Referee Zhang Guoxiong squinted slightly as he heard Chen Xiaoxiao's command, instantly recalling a tough match he once had against this very Togekiss while using his Altaria.

"It gave me hell last time too."

Togekiss wasted no time. She floated gracefully into the air, then blinked her large, shimmering eyes, sending a wave of charming energy straight at the Firebeast.

Xu Fei's Typhlosion nicknamed Firebeast meanwhile had already fired a low-powered Ember directly onto himself. The tiny flames crackled against his thick fur, harmlessly igniting the heat sensors of his Hidden Ability: Flash Fire.

Just as planned, Firebeast's firepower had now been amplified by 50%. But the price?

He accidentally locked eyes with the floating, fluttering Togekiss… and froze.

Togekiss's Attract took immediate effect. Firebeast stood transfixed his expression softened, his muscles relaxed, and his battle instincts dulled.

Just then, Togekiss struck.

Air condensed with incredible force in front of her, forming into a shimmering blade of compressed wind.

"Air Slash!"

The move sliced through the air like a high-speed dagger aimed at Firebeast's chest.

"Firebeast, snap out of it! Use Flamethrower—NOW!!"

Xu Fei shouted with the intensity of a battlefield commander. His voice cracked through the arena—raw, commanding, desperate.

Was he trying the old "Ash Ketchum Rejuvenation Roar" tactic?

Despite the confusion from Attract, Firebeast instinctively obeyed, inhaling sharply and unleashing a beam of white-hot fire.

But it was too rushed.

The Flamethrower, though powerful due to Flash Fire and Charcoal, was misaligned its form loose, its trajectory unsteady.

Togekiss's Air Slash, precise and rage-driven, cut straight through the flamethrower stream like a Honedge through silk.

WHAM! The blast of air hit Firebeast full-on, sending him stumbling back with a loud grunt.

A moment later, he froze mid-step. His pupils dilated.

Flinch triggered.

The effect stack was brutal: Air Slash has a base 30% flinch chance. But Togekiss's Serene Grace (called Heaven's Grace here) doubles that rate to 60%. One of the most frustrating combos in all high-level Trainer battles.

"Xu Fei underestimated her." Zhang Guoxiong sighed quietly, arms crossed. "He knows that Togekiss has Serene Grace and likely Super Luck as a second Ability. It was a mistake to try and meet her head-on without dodging. He should've used evasive movement immediately."

The Air Slash hadn't just flinched it might've struck a pressure point, too. Firebeast let out a low, guttural sound, wobbling as he struggled to stand.

"Togekiss's Air Slash is not something you can casually brush off anymore. You think it's still that baby Togepi you used to boss around?"

Chen Xiaoxiao's taunt was laced with cold irony, her voice crisp and confident.

Her words only stoked the flames of vengeance burning in Togekiss's heart.

Memories of being force-fed over-spicy Fire-Type Energy Cubes flooded back. Even now, her tongue burned at the thought of them red-hot, foul-tasting morsels meant for Fire-types, never a Fairy.

"(Those fire demons… they burned me… every day!)"

Togekiss screamed in righteous fury, flapping her wings and summoning wind into another shimmering blade.

"Togekiss, Air Slash, again!"

Chen Xiaoxiao didn't hesitate. Like a swordmaster going for the finishing strike, she commanded the next blow.

One hit had stunned the enemy. Two would devastate.

Togekiss charged her second Air Slash, her body glowing faintly with fairy aura, as if the anger itself was sharpening the blade.

On Xu Fei's side, he finally understood the weight of his earlier miscalculation.

He had assumed Togekiss's power would be average she was only trained for four years, after all. Compared to his decade-long bond with Firebeast, he thought this would be easy.

"I thought I could bait Flash Fire activation for advantage. I was too cocky."

Now, his own Pokémon might not even survive to make use of that boosted power.

Worse, he felt accused.

"I didn't bully Togepi back then!" he thought in agony. "I just didn't have access to any other type of cubes! I was traveling solo, okay?! Feeding her Fire Cubes was all I could do it wasn't on purpose…"

But intent didn't matter now. The grudge was set.

"Firebeast, come on! Pull it together Quick Attack, now! Dodge it!!"

Xu Fei shouted again with everything he had.

Same tone. Same desperation.

Was he Ash Ketchum again? Believing in the heart of Pokémon through shouting?

Firebeast stirred, blinking twice as his muscles twitched…

But the second Air Slash was already hurtling toward him, wind screaming through the arena.

There'd be no dodging if flinch held again.

Command depends on a flash of inspiration, and recovery depends on roaring?

The flinch status isn't something that disappears just because a Trainer shouts louder.

Togekiss's next Air Slash surged forward, a shimmering blade of compressed wind slicing through the air like a honed scythe, heading for the staggered Typhlosion.

BOOM!

Firebeast took the hit square in the chest. His body reeled, and the heavy impact echoed across the gym like thunder cracking against stone.

Typhlosion let out another fierce roar not of fear, but of pain and resistance.

Xu Fei's heart clenched.

"Firebeast!"

Seeing the normally proud Pokémon forced to its knees, Xu Fei couldn't help but cry out.

The attack had clearly struck a weak point again, knocking the breath out of Typhlosion, but instead of flinching like before, something sparked deep in the beast's core. A primal flame perhaps part of his evolutionary instinct ignited in defiance.

This time, the flinch effect didn't trigger.

"Togekiss, keep using Air Slash don't let up!"

Chen Xiaoxiao didn't hesitate. With Firebeast still disoriented and open, she seized the opportunity to continue her relentless offense.

She wasn't just trying to win anymore she was trying to bury Xu Fei in his own arrogance.

Xu Fei gritted his teeth as he recognized the danger. There was no time to evaluate Firebeast's full status.

"Firebeast, use Protect!"

As the next Air Slash hurled itself toward them, Firebeast roared and projected a shimmering green energy barrier in front of him.

BOOM!

The slashing wind exploded against the shield with another thunderclap. A massive wave of displaced air rippled across the battlefield.

"Now, Blaze Smokescreen! Then Quick Attack to reposition! Follow up with Flamethrower!"

Xu Fei barked three rapid-fire commands, shifting instantly into counterattack mode.

Black smoke gushed from Firebeast's mouth, engulfing the battlefield like a curtain of night. It swirled thick and heavy, cutting off all visual tracking. Firebeast, using the cover, bolted across the field with Quick Attack, his body a flicker of speed. He re-emerged behind Togekiss, jaw wide open, charging another blast of searing flame.

Watching from the sidelines, Master Zhang Guoxiong adjusted his glasses, nodding in approval.

"Now that's the Xu Fei I remember the one who won the Alliance Cup. He doesn't stall when pressured he adapts. Classic battlefield pivoting. Ahem."

Just as he was praising Xu Fei's tactics, a gust of smoke wafted into his face.

"Ack—what in the"

"Togekiss! Use Fairy Wind! Blow the smoke away!"

Chen Xiaoxiao pointed sharply. She'd already anticipated this ploy.

Togekiss's wings shimmered with pink fairy energy as she beat them with force. A glittering gale burst forward, dispersing the Smokescreen in one sweeping blow.

The mist vanished.

And now the entire gym could see Firebeast had repositioned directly behind Togekiss, his mouth blazing with built-up fire energy.

Chen Xiaoxiao reacted instantly.

"Togekiss! Attract, then Air Slash! Don't let him fire!"

Togekiss spun gracefully, her eyes widening with radiant charm, emitting an aura of dazzling affection.

The swirling pink hearts pulsed in waves toward Firebeast.

Caught mid-charge, Firebeast's expression shifted from fury to confusion… then to infatuation.

A crimson blush spread across his snout. A large heart bloomed in his eyes.

The flame in his mouth fizzled into harmless embers.

"Firebeast!"

Xu Fei roared, eyes wide in disbelief.

"You've battled for over ten years and this is what stops you?!"

From the judge's box, Zhang Guoxiong sighed and shook his head, watching the once-dominant Typhlosion now wobbling like a lovesick Numel.

"It's over," he muttered, shooting a sharp glance toward Chen Xiaoxiao.

The girl's eyes were unwavering. She was calm, focused, and already issuing her final command.

"Togekiss—it's time. Air Slash. Finish it."

There was no way she would give Xu Fei the chance to pull another Ash-style "Rejuvenation Roar."

Togekiss once again shaped the air into a crescent blade, her expression one of firm resolve.

She launched the attack.

BOOM!

The slash hit its mark. Firebeast crumpled, his eyes swirling in a daze. His battle aura extinguished like a snuffed flame.

A long silence hung in the air.

Then:

"Firebeast is unable to battle! Togekiss wins!"

Referee Zhang Guoxiong raised his hand to signal the end of the match.

On the sidelines, his mind was still spinning.

"Two months ago, Togekiss was only marginally stronger than my Altaria. But now… she's in another class."

As the last echoes of the battle faded, so did any doubts.

Chen Xiaoxiao hadn't just evolved Togekiss she had forged her into a force to be reckoned with.
