Forty Seven

Chapter Forty Seven

Brent's POV

I arrived at Jacob's house and he was not alone.

There he is. And her mother.

Jacob was standing at the doorway with his arms on both side and he looked like a mother tiger forbidding anyone to come near its cubs.

Anabel, his mother was trembling as she stood outside. I bet she heard about what happened to come here.

"I said leave!" Jacob growled at his mother who jumped from his roaring voice.

I hissed and went out of the car, walking towards Anabel.

Jacob's eyes are red, his alpha taking him over. His wolf in control and I am guessing that he barely got a hold of his humanity by now.

The effects of being away from a mate. Damn, Lucianna… why did you have to leave him like this?

Jacob looked at me in a snap. He only noticed my presence when I'm almost near his mother. Damn, even his senses is not as sharp as it should be.

"Brent, oh my god, please talk to him…" Anabel cried.

"I don't want anyone near my house! Leave!" he spat at me, slamming the door close.

I sighed.

"Oh no. How did this happen!?" Anabel cried, palming her face and trying to wipe off her tears that continuously flowing.

My jaw clenched as I look at Jacob's house. Suddenly, this place feels scary and gloom. I even feared to take any step closer because its as if he will run out of that house and grab me on my neck.

And to think that I know Jacob since my teens, been closed enough to him, and yet I feel that? This is different.

"Let's go, Luna Anabel." I urged her, holding her back so she would follow but she shook her head fast.

"No, I can't leave him alone like this. I did that before, I can't… I can't do it now."

Anabel distanced herself to the young Jacob ever since Roscoe was banned from the pack lands. It's not that she hated Jacob but being a loving mother to her child, she wanted to be fair even the other do not deserve it.

"Luna Anabel, this is different from before. Let's just go."

"How can I do that if he breaks himself like this?!" she cried more.

Back then, Jacob tolerated his mother. It was enough for him that she is well and found comfort in giving her sons the fairness she believe. But now, I don't think Jacob can hide his true feelings nor he has control over his wolf.

In the end, I managed to get her out of Jacob's front and drove her back to their original house.

Alejandro was there, sitting on their patio and out for deep thoughts. The closing sound of the car door as we slid out of it is the only thing that distracted him away from his thoughts.

He stood up and slowly went to Anabel, hugging her tight inside his arms.

"Your son is a mess, Alejandro!" she cried in his chest.

Alejandro nodded to me to go inside their house, I bowed and did as he said.

"Honey, Jacob is old for this. Let's just get off his back, okay?" was the last words I heard from Alejandro before heading inside their house.

"Ohh." said a voice from the second floor of the house. I looked up and saw Roscoe there, holding a glass of liquor in his hand. "What's happening out there? I can hear mother's cry." then he started walking down the stairs.

There is this… what should I call it? A sarcasm? Amusement? Victory? Or maybe all combined because that is what I see in his face right now.

I crossed my arms and looked at him as he stopped just in front of me, raising one of his brow and smirking so boldly.

"You knew too well what is happening, Roscoe."

He shrugged and chuckled before sipping on his glass.

"No idea what you're blabbering about, beta."

"What did you tell her?" I asked, not bothering to filtered my judgment. There is no way he is out of this chaos.

I saw his eyes got serious but only for a second because he wore his smiling mask again.

This pretentious bastard won't spill a damn information and I can see it already.

Roscoe sighed, shaking his head like he finds something amusing before sitting comfortably on the sofa. I'm now standing on his side.

"Do I need to tell her anything? I don't know that girl personally."

"Did you blackmailed her? Threaten her life? Or maybe Alpha Jacob?"

Roscoe hissed. "You haven't seen her fight in the field, are you? Well, I have and that girl needs no threatening, she can perfectly save her ass." then he looked at me. "Is that all how you sees her? Someone weak and fragile and scared? No wonder she left."

His roar of laughter almost made me out of wit but Alejandro came inside the door with Anabel crying on his shoulder.

If Jacob hears that, I'm sure he won't have much control and beat this guy up.

"Brent, join us for dinner." Anabel said, sniffling. I think she's done for the day about worrying Jacob.

I shook my head and stepped forward. "I have some things to do at the Hall, thank you but I'll humbly decline the offer."

She nodded and excused herself.

Alejandro gave me a weak smile. "I hope my son is not burdening you too much, Brent."

Oh, he is.

But I'll die before I say that.

"Nothing like that, Alpha Alejandro."

"If I can be of help, don't hesitate to call."

I nodded and head out of their house.

Alejandro can't butt in to pack's business since Jacob is the one holding the Alpha title right now. There might be some breakage in loyalty if he would turn over the pack, even in temporarily line.

No, I'm not going to the Hall. I'm going straight to my Alpha because it is part of my job to not lose the balance.

Otherwise, Shadow people will fall.

Jacob's POV

I'm screaming inside but my shell is silent and numb. My wolf won't stop creating havoc inside me, and I don't have the strength to battle with it.

All the mirrors inside my house are shattered and broken, I can't look at my reflection because what I see is a man defeated by sins, defeated by evil, a lone man who's mate are nowhere to be found.

"This place turned to--damn, is that a dead rat right there?"

I snapped my head and found Brent standing on the opened bedroom door.

Goddammit! I don't want anyone around me and I'm not fucking kidding!

I stood up, hovering over his height and growled my words.

"What are you doing here?!"

The Beta didn't flinched or budge. Brent just looks at me with that blank expression which irritates me more.

"I've been standing here like thirty minutes, I guess." Brent answered.

Damn it.

I knew my senses are failing me and it angers me! Not that I wanted to, but my wolf just denies anything but the thought of mate. Whining about our mate. I know my wolf mirrors my inner feelings and I can't do anything if I'm here malfunctioning because I feel like dying!

I wiped my face with my palm. Argument with mother earlier is enough to make me feel tired! Damn it!

"Just get the fuck out." I said, more calm but with low growls coming out of my chest.

"Cidrey reached out to me." Brent announced. "It seems your portal is closed to everyone."

Cidrey is the Head of Trackers, the one who took Justin's work.

To be honest, I didn't close my portals but my wolf seems to yearn and tries to connect with Lucianna over and over that any other link was forbidden to disrupt it.

I won't blame my wolf, that is what I want as well.

"What did he tell you?"

Brent shrugged and leaned on my bedroom door. "Nothing. He just wanted me to tell you that. You asked him to look for Lucianna?"

I hissed, grabbing an alcohol nearby. Liquor seems to be everywhere in the house since Lucianna left.

It is true. I asked the Head of Trackers to find my mate, not get her, not get close to her, but just… at least…

I want to be sure she's fine. I'm dying to think she's not eating well, not sleeping well.

"You know," I said in a low voice. "She can't sleep in a big bed alone… it terrifies her."

I don't know why I said that all of a sudden but that's my mind have been thinking for the two nights she's gone.

Brent didn't answered, and I know he's listening to carefully access the situation.

"I just want to know if she's in a smaller bed, so at least, she can sleep at peace." I answered to Brent's question.

"I heard from Harley that you forbade him to watch over Lucianna even from afar."

I looked at Brent, a small smile crepting on my face.

"Yeah. I did say that. Good he remembers but its too bad he forgot that he shouldn't mention it to anyone."

"I am not anyone, Jake." Brent hissed. "Why don't you send Harley to where Lucianna were so he can assure you the safety of your mate?"

"So I can do my role to this pack, right?" I chuckled sarcastically. "I don't even care about the pack right now, Brent."

All I care about is her. Lucianna. My mate. Mine. She's mine but she's not happy to be with me.

Brent flushed in anger and I know why. We both committed ourselves to the pack, but I really don't care about it anymore.

"You are the Alpha, Jacob!" he yelled. "It is your duty to care for your land, for your people! How can you fucked up so bad to say those shits!"

"Shut up, Brent." I said in a whisper.

My fist formed tight in the glass I'm holding as his words starts to sip in my skin, making sense coming from him.

I kept telling the same phrases ever since I acknowledge this position, and my focus never did failed me then. But when I lost her, I can't find my resolve for the pack that I built for years.

I started to ask myself: 'How about me?'

"No! You need to come to your mind, and stop getting defeated by this! You're an Alpha! You should have control of your wolf and not the other way around! If you want to know what she does and where she's at then have Harley protect her so you can do your job!"

"Shut the fuck up!" I yelled and threw the glass of already shattered glass on the wall just beside his face.

"I made a promise! And I'll keep it for her! You, don't have a say in my relationship with Lucianna!"

"Right! Because I'm the Beta who has a say in your relationship with this pack!"

"Then I don't want to be the Alpha if I won't be able to think of her just for the pack you talk about!"

Brent was silenced by my words.

I was huffing for breath and started to question if I said the words right. Apparently, I think I've said it alright.

"You don't mean that." Brent whispered, slightly calm. "You can't turn your back to your people, to us! You swore an oath, you have to live by it!"

I chuckled inwardly and all Brent says starts to become without wisdom in my ears.

"I don't care."

Brent's jaw dropped.

"What?" he closed his mouth with his hand, closing his eyes shut. "I can't believe you're saying those words, Jacob. Well, if you think that way then the pack do not deserve you as the leader. Aren't you just a coward?"

He turned his back on me and walked out of the house, shifting in his wolf form and running to the woods.

I exhaled heavily.

Yes, I am just a coward.
