That afternoon, I wasn't in any rush.

Cadence, on the other hand, was.

Let her simmer for a while.

After a week, I got a call from Mrs. Stratton. She said her aunt had brought two free-range chickens from her hometown and made me some chicken soup to boost my health.

But as soon as I stepped through the door, Cadence burst in like a madwoman, screaming at me.

"Evelina! How can you be so heartless? Now that I'm left with nothing, are you satisfied?"

I calmly sat down next to Mrs. Stratton, ladled myself a bowl of soup, and took a small sip.

"Is the divorce finalized?"

Her eyes turned red with rage as she yelled at me, "Why don't you just die! I've never met such a vicious woman in my life!"

In truth, Cadence's ex-husband in America had already received the surgical records I'd sent him.

After reviewing the documents, he concluded that Cadence had cheated during their marriage and was pregnant with someone else's child, so he refused to split their assets.
