Rain Chen – POV
---
The moment his knuckles hit my jaw, I see stars.
Sharp pain. Copper on my tongue. A flash of his mother's eyes in his rage.
Good boy.
I stumble back against the car, breath knocked out of me, the corner of my lip split. I taste blood. But I laugh.
"That's it," I grin, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. "That's the Maddox blood."
He's not done.
He grabs my collar, yanking me forward with a snarl. His eyes—those dark eyes—so much like Sky's when she was sixteen and heartbroken. So much like mine when I was destroying her.
"You ever go near her again—" he growls, voice shaking, "—I'll kill you. I don't care if you're my father. I will make sure no one ever finds you."
"That's the spirit," I hiss, breath fanning his cheek. "Threaten the man who gave you your name."
"I don't want your name."
"But you're wearing it so well."
He shoves me hard, and I nearly laugh again.
His hands are trembling.
His jaw's tight.
Good.
He's losing control—just like me.
"You think she's gonna stop loving you because of a few mistakes?" I ask, tilting my head. "I tried to make her hate me. Over and over again. But she stayed. Forgave. Every time."
He flinches. It's subtle. But it's there.
Hook, line, sinker.
"You don't scare me," he spits.
"Oh, but I should," I whisper.
I step forward slowly. Close enough for him to feel the chill in my voice.
"Because I know what happens next, son. You keep hurting her. And she'll keep letting you. Until one day—she doesn't."
I smile.
"And then you'll know what real loneliness feels like."
He doesn't answer. Just stands there, breathing hard, like he's going to explode.
And then he walks away.
Not because he's weak.
Because he's smart.
Because deep down, he knows I'm not wrong.
I watch his back disappear into the dark, heart racing, blood still dripping from my lip.
He's just like me.
And that means I've already won.
