Renz's movements were slow yet precise, maintaining a certain elegance while meticulously selecting ingredients. There was a sense of unfamiliarity in his cooking, but this unfamiliarity was constantly being adjusted through his deliberate actions.
Soma Yukihira's cooking speed was the exact opposite of Renz's. After being swayed by his father, he had decided to take the Totsuki Academy exam. He certainly didn't want to fail the transfer student assessment and slink away in shame. Wouldn't his old man just laugh at him?
"I'm done!" Soma Yukihira tossed the green onions over the top of his rice bowl, placing it on a plate. With one hand, he presented it. "Enjoy! My hospitality may be lacking, but please be kind!"
Is that egg over rice? Erina glanced at it. It was a dish made with the most common ingredients. The old her would have disdained it, but with the years of experience, she no longer held so much prejudice against such dishes.
She picked up her spoon. Soma Yukihira looked on expectantly. The moment a diner showed a happy expression after eating his food was when he felt most excited!
Erina took a bite. She put down the spoon. "It passes." Erina knew the expected standard for Totsuki Academy at this stage after just one bite.
"It passed? Is it that good?!" Soma Yukihira eagerly pressed for more. He was happy it passed, but passing with just one bite significantly dampened his excitement.
"It's average," Erina gave a very ordinary evaluation. "But there's no problem getting into this academy."
"Just an average rating?" Soma Yukihira was a bit disappointed, but quickly perked up. "It seems this school is quite impressive. My cooking only reached an average level."
"Don't waste food," Erina said, glancing at him. "Hisako, you eat the rest of the rice."
"Eh, aren't you going to just throw it away?" Hisako Arato was stunned. Given Erina-sama's usual practice, shouldn't she discard the dish?
"Finishing a dish shows respect to a chef," Renz said from the side, while still cooking. "Throwing it away directly isn't just trampling on someone's efforts; it's also disrespectful to the food."
"A reviewer only needs one bite to gauge the skill, but to just throw it away would be a waste," Renz gently shook his hand. "Hisako, if you don't eat it, then allow me to enjoy Yukihira's dish."
Hisako Arato immediately shielded the bowl of egg over rice. She shook her head. "How can I? Wouldn't that be an indirect kiss?"
"But why didn't Erina-sama finish it?" Hisako Arato asked again.
"Because Erina is waiting for my dish," Renz stopped his movements, a smile on his face. No matter how many years passed, some people... their little thoughts would never change. They liked to hide their feelings, but even without saying anything, their every move would tell you their thoughts. Such unstraightforward cuteness.
"Shut up!" Erina glared at Renz. "I just haven't had your cooking in a long time."
"Alright, I present my crown to my queen," Renz served his dish. "This is the first dish you taught me—Eggs Benedict."
"Can't you be less childish?" Erina snorted. "You're how old now, still doing this?"
"Eh, is he old?" Hisako Arato was confused. However, compared to Soma Yukihira's egg over rice, the Eggs Benedict on the table certainly looked more appetizing.
Erina picked up her knife and fork. She slowly and carefully chewed the dish Renz had made.
"It's been a long time since I made this dish, so I'm a bit rusty," Renz said apologetically. Moreover, this body's knife skills were indeed too poor; his cooking speed was hindered by the efficiency of his tool usage.
"It's delicious," Erina commented.
"Is it that delicious?" Soma Yukihira, ever the straightforward one, jumped out. He saw that Erina had only taken one bite of his egg over rice, but was reluctant to part with Renz's dish, and seemed to want to try it too.
"Uh, I made two; one was for myself," Renz said, bringing out another plate. "Do you want to eat it?"
"Can I?" Soma Yukihira turned and said, "Thank you for the meal!" Soma Yukihira truly didn't know what modesty was. He was almost obsessed with cooking. When faced with an excellent dish, he couldn't help but feel curious and want to try it. He had thought the other person's knife skills were too simple when he watched him cook, but he didn't expect that appearances could be deceiving. Such ordinary knife skills produced such impressive cuisine.
He took the first bite. A sweet and sour taste filled his mouth. Eating this taste for breakfast would usually be cloying, but the egg aroma from the sticky liquid enveloped by the perfectly executed egg white balanced these sauces. Several flavors coalesced, creating a subtly warm and artistic ambiance. The meticulousness in every step, done with the utmost care, allowed one to feel the concentration and heart put into creating this dish.
This was a dish that could only be made with true dedication. If even one part wasn't good enough, not meticulous enough, the entire flavor would collapse, either too sour or too sweet. To what precise degree of processing did one have to go to thoroughly neutralize these flavors?
"All in all, he's a very skilled chef." Soma Yukihira gave this evaluation in his mind. By the time he came back to his senses, the Eggs Benedict on the plate was already finished.
"I'm full," Erina put down her knife and fork. Half of the Eggs Benedict on her plate remained, neatly untouched. "Renz, you finish the rest. Don't waste it."
"And, you must fulfill what you promised me!" Erina said, pouting. A young girl's most anticipated moment should be putting on her wedding dress. In the future, Erina didn't even get to wear a wedding dress, nor did she have a wedding ceremony, before embarking on a busy life. For this unexperienced wedding, even after so many years, Erina still held a grudge.
"I will definitely make up for that regret," Renz nodded. I'll give you a grand wedding. A wedding that the whole world will witness.
Let everyone bless our wedding. In the previous life, I entered the Nakiri family as a son-in-law, but this time, I, Renz, will make everyone notice that Erina, your husband, is the best in the world!
---
Renz's confident declaration and Erina's subtle longing for a wedding certainly set an interesting tone for their relationship moving forward in this timeline. How do you think this will play out at Totsuki Academy, especially with Soma Yukihira now in the picture?
