Logan stood before the library and inhaled sharply, 'Here we go.' He pushed open the door and entered.
He walked to the librarian who put down the book she was reading and smiled at Logan.
"I was wondering when you'd show up. Here you go." She handed two scrolls to Logan, his spells.
Logan thanked her before heading to his room. He'd ask for the answers to his questions later.
He entered the room and checked for his roommate and luckily, he was not there.
He quickly undid the binding of one and read aloud its name and description:
Dark Space; Rankless- The spell allows the wielder to create a separate space within and without themselves. Range and volume depend on the rank of the user's mana core.
Logan dropped the spell and picked the other, he also undid its binding and read its description:
Dark Flash; up to C-rank ~ Fuses the caster with a thin membrane of darkness to accelerate their movement. The effect is stronger at night.
Logan closed up both of them and let out a satisfied laugh.
Sure they weren't necessarily combat-oriented but their potential uses seemed almost boundless.
Logan had chosen Dark Space for two reasons; the first being its uses and the second being its rankless nature.
Rankless spells were spells that were effective irrespective of rank. The only difference is the quality of its effect.
There were basically three types of spells; Ranked, Capped, and Rankless.
They increased in rarity from left to right.
Ranked spells were those like the ones he had- excluding his new ones.
They had clear, defined ranks that the user must have to use them effectively.
A perfect example would be his Dark Shot spell.
The average E-rank mana core had mana of far higher quality than an F-rank core.
And so as Logan was casting an E-rank spell as an F-rank mage, it drained his mana core as it used quantity to make up for quality.
That was why his body had been ruined and his mana core cracked when he cast six E-rank spells. It was a sheer miracle that he was alive.
Capped Spells were different. They worked for all ranks below their limit.
The spell, Dark Flash, that Logan had could be used by mages with a core rank of F to C.
The only difference was the quality of its effect. The spell would have a greater effect when cast by someone of a higher rank.
It was just that above the C-rank, there would be no further increase in the effect of the spell. Hence the name Capped.
Rankless spells like that of Dark Space had no limit on the rank of who could use them.
Logan without further ado began studying the Dark Space spell.
He studied every hand sign needed and didn't plan to mess up especially considering it had to do with space.
After about an hour, he felt like he was ready.
He sat cross-legged in a lotus position, his hands formed signs as his mouth moved to read aloud the words of the spell.
Trails of darkness left his body formed a sphere in front of him.
It looked like a Dark Shot but it soon made its difference clear.
Space rippled around the sphere as more trails were absorbed by the spell.
It expanded until it reached the size of Logan's chest.
At this point, Logan could see thin cracks running through the space around him. It was almost as though the spell was devouring it.
The sphere stopped enlarging but Logan did not stop casting both out of curiosity and fear for what would happen if the spell collapsed.
The spell compressed to the size of a needle point and shot at Logan's chest.
The latter felt nothing as the spell passed through, no pain- nothing.
What he felt though was an incredible pulling force land on his mana core.
His core relinquished pulse after pulse of mana to the spell in his chest that only seemed to grow larger, far beyond the expanse of Logan's body before stopping.
Logan could feel the spell within him. It felt like a large hollow space filled his chest.
Logan, at this time, had stopped casting as there was no further need for such.
The hollow space seemed to have left his body slightly, it was a very strange feeling but at least, the spell was no longer draining his mana core.
He approached one of the desks in the room and searched it eventually finding a pen.
Logan focused on the space within him.
He mumbled a few words and a flare of darkness left the lightless expanse that was the dark space and entered the real world.
Space twisted slightly as the flare touched the pen causing it to disappear.
Logan immediately felt something enter the empty space within him.
Turning his focus to himself, a dark space slowly revealed itself to him, and floating amongst the darkness was the pen.
He focused on the pen and it vanished, appearing in his hand in an instant.
Logan smiled to himself, The spell was working as intended. The first part at least.
He focused on the dark space once again and poured mana into it.
Space darkened around Logan in a five-meter radius within which he could sense everything around him.
He felt his perception enhance and take on a radial limit.
He stopped pouring his mana and the space around him returned to normal.
"Increased perception and definite storage, check. Now for enhanced speed." Logan's smile widened as he studied and cast the second spell.
Streams of darkness appeared around Logan's body quickly forming a membrane.
They partly fused with his figure making his outline blurry and indefinite.
Logan was amazed by the effect of the spell. Unlike most spells that required you to cast again and again to keep on using them, the spells he had newly received were of another kind.
They required a single casting to be used repeatedly but at the same time consumed mana.
For Dark Flash, he would need to dismiss the spell to make it stop. As for Dark Space, it didn't take mana as long as he wasn't using it.
Logan walked to the door, faced the opposite end of the room, and leaned forward.
His figure blurred and he seemingly appeared on the other side.
Logan staggered a bit and ran to the bathroom that was attached to their room to throw up.
During his movement, everything had zoomed past him in his vision and the instinctive urge he had to focus on a particular thing was his undoing.
The attempt made him feel immensely nauseous.
Logan soon emerged from the bathroom and changed his uniform.
They were still bloody from his spar, the tear they had had already been repaired by the enchantments the uniform possessed.
'Speed and spatial awareness. These will help me in the long run.' Logan pondered the possible applications of his new spell as he left his room and headed into another two rooms over.
It was about time Orion gave him the answer to his questions.
