The doctor did not push her away but instead held her steady. "Mrs. Rahman, are you all right?"
The doctor's voice was surprisingly soft, brimming with the compassion typical of a healer.
Nadi hadn't experienced such kindness from a stranger in a long while. She awkwardly pulled her arm back, putting some distance between them, and stood firm. "Thank you." Her voice was low and hoarse, the pain in her stomach making it quiver.
"Are you in pain somewhere? Your forehead is covered in cold sweat." The doctor kindly asked and took a step forward, steadying Nadi once again.
Nadi's stomach was in severe pain. At first, it felt like needle pricks, but gradually, the pain intensified as if a stirring rod was constantly churning inside.
Luckily for her, the doctor supported her once more.
"My stomach..." Nadi gasped, "Stomachache."
"Assistant Ryan, Mrs. Rahman's condition is abnormal. We must take her to the hospital." The doctor decisively turned his head and spoke to Ryan behind him.
There was still no change in Ryan's expression. He said, "I need to discuss this with Mr. Rahman."
"What is there to discuss? There's no time! This is his wife! Does he have to be told about every medical check-up? What strong control he has." The doctor scooped Nadi up horizontally, "If Mr. Rahman has any complaints, let him find me!"
In three quick strides, the doctor carried Nadi away from there.
...
Nadi was sent to the hospital, but later, she lost consciousness due to the pain. She didn't know what tests were done at the hospital.
She woke up once during the process and found that the doctor had his eyes closed and was resting on the sofa opposite the bed.
Perhaps sensing her awakening, the doctor opened his eyes, walked over to the bedside, and asked with concern, "How are you feeling? Still in pain?"
Nadi had just regained consciousness, still feeling drowsy and mentally unwell. She sat up, shook her head, and said, "Thank you, Doctor, for your trouble."
"My name is Hasan Wijaya. I am Adi's friend, so I should call you sister-in-law. There's no need to thank me or mention any trouble." Hasan's self-introduction was gentle and elegant.
However, Nadi found it amusing.
Sister-in-law?
Her?
"By the way," Hasan spoke again, this time with a serious tone, "How long have you been suffering from your stomach ailment? Your condition is very pessimistic. I'm sorry, but I took it upon myself to conduct a comprehensive examination of your stomach."
"Subsequently, I discovered that you had undergone a systematic examination here before..."
"Mr. Wijaya." Nadi tightly clenched her fists, interrupting his next words, "That is my privacy."
Hasan noticed Nadi's panic and reassured her, "Don't worry, I haven't seen it. The results of the previous examination are still sealed. But..."
He changed his tone and solemnly stated, "Today's examination was personally conducted by me. I will definitely know the results. When the time comes, I will tell you the outcome."
Nadi pursed her lips, moistening her dry lips. After a while, she directly said, "Actually, it's stomach cancer, isn't it?"
Nadi's calm mention of "stomach cancer" left Hasan surprised. He said, "It's possible, but don't worry too much. It's not necessarily stomach cancer. Of course, if it really is stomach cancer, it can be early, middle, or late-stage. Besides, Adi has extensive resources. He will help you."
Nadi found it strange. Doesn't Mr. Wijaya know how bad her relationship with Adi is? Help? The person who most eagerly anticipates her death in this world is probably Adi.
"Mr. Wijaya, I hope you can help me keep the test results confidential, especially from Adi. When the test results come out, only heaven, you, and I will know. Can you do that?" Nadi had already anticipated how terrible the results might be and thus preemptively requested Hasan's assistance in keeping it secret.
She didn't want to be seriously ill and still be ridiculed and humiliated by Adi.
If Adi knew she was sick, he would only think she was pretending to be ill.
Hasan had just returned to the country a month ago, and prior to that, he had solely focused on medical research. He knew nothing about the issues between Adi and Nadi.
It was only now that he realized there was something odd about this couple.
"Can you do that?" Nadi met Hasan's gaze and asked again.
Nadi's eyes were clear and bright, deep black and beautiful, like amber veiled with mist, beauty tinged with a trace of fragility.
Being stared at by such a pair of eyes, Hasan's heartbeat quickened a little: "Yes."
As soon as those words left his mouth, Hasan was stunned. He couldn't understand why he had agreed to Nadi's request.
Nadi didn't notice Hasan's absent-mindedness, "Thank you."
Hasan snapped back to reality and smiled gently, "You're welcome."
They didn't say anything else. Hasan had matters to attend to and left the ward. Nadi's eyelids felt heavy, and she lay back down and fell asleep again.
...
"Mmm... Ugh, Er!" A rare occurrence of not having a nightmare, yet Nadi still felt breathless as if a pair of large hands were forcefully strangling her neck.
Something wasn't right... Someone was actually choking her neck!
Breathing became increasingly constricted. With great difficulty, Nadi opened her eyes and came face to face with Adi's chilling and terrifying gaze, "You wretch, putting on an act pretending to be sick to seduce Hasan, you really are something! Tell me, what do you want with Hasan!"
