I stood frozen, Liam's confession replaying in my mind. The gentle buzz of the coffee shop faded to background noise as I tried to process his words.
"Elara?" Liam's voice cut through my thoughts. His eyes searched mine, worry creasing his forehead. "I'm sorry if I made things awkward. That wasn't my intention."
I shook my head quickly. "No, it's not that. I just... wasn't expecting it."
Liam offered a small smile, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "I understand if you need time to think about it. Or if you don't feel the same way." He reached across the table, his fingers lightly touching mine. "More than anything, I don't want to lose you as a friend."
The sincerity in his voice made my chest tighten. This was Liam—dependable, kind Liam who'd been nothing but supportive since the day we met. Who defended me when others wouldn't. Who remembered my coffee order after I mentioned it once.
"You won't lose me," I promised. "No matter what happens."
