I checked my watch again as I waited for Ethan to pick up his damn phone. This was the third call, and my patience was wearing thin. When he finally answered, I didn't bother hiding my frustration.
"Ethan, man, what's the hold up? Are you in or out for tonight?"
"Julian..." Ethan's voice came through sounding hesitant. "I don't know about this. With everything going on with Elara and—"
"Seriously?" I cut him off, pacing outside the tattoo shop where Rhys was still getting his work finished. "It's Rhys's birthday. Your best friend since forever. And you're still on the fence because of your step-sister?"
"It's not that simple," Ethan replied. "You don't understand what he did to her."
I ran a hand through my hair in frustration. "Look, I get that family comes first or whatever, but Rhys needs us right now. All of us. He's going through some serious shit."
The silence that followed told me Ethan was torn. Good. He should be feeling guilty.
